Page 51 May 2015 Eagle Scout repairs exhibit at the Pioneer Living History Museum Wolfgang 1/2 HORIZONTAL COLOR By Shelby Slaughter Austin Suder joined Cub Scouts when he was in third grade. Suder loved being outdoors and enjoyed physical activities, so he knew that he was making the right decision when he joined Troop 6. Throughout his involvement, he earned merit badges in swimming, knot tying, fi re prevention, CPR, fi rst aid, whittling, knife safety and more. All of these awards led to him achieving the rank of an Eagle Scout in December 2014. “Scouting is the hardest journey you’ll ever encounter, there is a huge chance for failure, but the harder you work, the greater the reward,” Suder said of his adventures with Boy Scouts thus far. “Don’t wait too long to start working on your Eagle [Scout] project. The feeling of pride you receive from helping others will stay with you for your entire life.” Suder and his family heard that the Pioneer Living History Museum was searching for someone to help refurbish the Gallows exhibit, an exhibit that had worn over the years and was a danger to anyone who tried to climb or walk on it. Suder grew to know the museum well when he started working in the Blacksmith shop located within the museum. With the help of Boy Scouts and other traits he had accumulated over the years, Suder knew that he could refurbish the exhibit with something more up-to-date and – more importantly – safe. After six months, Suder’s project is fi nally completed and he said he takes great pride in it. The student gathered nuts, bolts, sketches and wood from all over the Valley to create the masterpiece back in September 2014. The assembly line consisted of over 30 Boy Scouts, parents and scout leaders. When it was completed, there was a presentation and dedication to Suder for his efforts. Suder gave a speech about the history of the gallows project and even did a reenactment of a sheriff coming to arrest him and then summon him to the gallows. “It is an honor to see how giving back to the Pioneer Living History Museum can be so rewarding. I am fl attered and honored to be recognized by the museum for my work. Because of this special dedication event, I now know that the museum really appreciates all of my hard work. I am inspired to continue my volunteer efforts within the community.” Austin Suder and a team of 30 Boy Scouts refurbished the Gallows exhibit which had grown worn by age and weather.
