Page 4 May 2015 Showing love and respect to all By Amanda Goossen “Nature was to be spelled with a capital N, the way you spell God with a capital G,” said American architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. Standing at the base of the David and Gladys Wright Home – decades after Wright made that statement – one can almost feel his words, permeating with truth. The home and its property radiate everything I hold dear about Arcadia. I adore the rolling green grass, mountain views and especially the historical significance. The daughter of a builder and a longtime lover of history, I stand on the Wright property and I smile. Three years ago, our community was heartbroken and enraged at the thought of losing a s i g n i f i c a n t p a r t o f architectural history. The people rallied, spoke up at city meetings and fought the idea of demolition. Now, the property is the c e n t e r t o a n o t h e r community issue. Although a new owner intends to renovate the home, his eventual plans for the site have caused some in the community to worry, to question commercial use of our neighborhood, to fight back and become angry. Greg Bruns, owner and publisher of Arcadia News, and I have history with the David and Gladys Wright home . Greg covered a story in Arcadia Home & Design in 2008 , following Gladys’ death. The photographs of the home were full of color and life. They showcased the fulfilling lives that the Wrights led, and even included old suitcases and a shaving kit – items kept within the space, which was inhabited for decades. I had the chance to walk through the home in 2012, before the owner at the time considered demolition. The home was sad, filthy and painful to see. Witnessing four years of neglect was eye opening. Recently, Greg and I both had a chance to tour the property. Experiencing the changes and the small renovations was an experience I’ll never forget. Whatever side of the argument you’re on, one thing is for sure: The David and Gladys Wright Home, as well as its builder, deserve to be celebrated. The fact that Wright gave our community such a stunning piece of American architectural history proves that our neighborhood is a beloved piece of this country. We are a remarkable community. My mother-in-law was visiting last weekend as my family ran the Arcadia Family Fun Run in honor of a local family and their beloved baby girl. She was waiting when I put my foot over the finish line and said something I may never forget. Now, my mother-in-law is a tough as nails New Yorker who has spent the past 50 years of her life in Los Angeles. Small town life tends to be lost on her. She looked me in the eye and said, “There are really great people here.” Witnessing families cheer for each other, watching over 900 people gather in honor of a sweet baby girl lost to SIDS, seeing teamwork and love…It wasn’t lost on this 65-year-old woman, who has spent her life in big cities with a hard- to-come-by community feel. And with this Wright home I believe we Arcadians need to employ the same level of love, trust and respect we show each other on a daily basis. The David and Gladys Wright House deserves just that.
