Page 46 May 2015 Native Arizonan no stranger to the American West Coast By Kaley Kalil Christopher Callan, originally from Tucson, has lived in the Arcadia/Biltmore areas for 3 1/2 years now. However, he’s no stranger to the West Coast. Callan recently enjoyed a weekend getaway to San Francisco, where he met up with a friend. Instead of staying in the city, Callan and his friend chose to head 15 miles south to WHERE’S THE NEIGHBOR? Paci fi ca, where they stayed at a hotel in the popular sur fi ng locale of Paci fi ca State Beach. “There were about 200 surfers out on the water every morning. It was a solid black line of wet suits and we enjoyed watching them surf,” Callan said. “It was so beautiful there. If you ever go to San Fran, I highly recommend staying in nearby Paci fi ca instead.” Callan and his friend have journeyed on numerous road trips down the coast in recent months, driving through Washington, Oregon and California along the breathtakingly beautiful Paci fi c Coast Highway. Callan and his friend didn’t take any old trusty steed along for the ride. They opted for a 1976 GMC stick shift truck, nicknamed “The Horse with No Name,” after the popular song by America. “I remember we drove through this winding road that’s really steep,” Callan said. “You go straight up this hill – very high elevation – and then go straight down just to get into LA. We were in the right lane the whole time, thinking, ‘Come on, baby! You can do it!’ And we made it. But, it was tough.” A lack of air conditioning and no radio quickly turned into a recipe for the perfect road trip. They listened to music by The Monkeys on a portable Bose Bluetooth speaker, with a fresh coastal breeze blowing through their rolled-down windows. “That was pretty fun, because we really did put that truck to the test,” Callan said. A highlight of the journey for Callan was when they stopped off at Humboldt Redwoods State Park, with its more than 17,000 acres of old-growth coast Giant Redwood trees. They pulled over after reading a sign that read, “Drive through a Redwood.” “We might have been able to make it. But, we got the nose in, took a picture, and then reversed out because we didn’t want to get stuck!” Callan said. “Those trees are just so huge and so old. When you see them in person, you realize how small we actually are.” Callan is looking forward to several trips in the coming months to Sedona, Long Beach, Mission Beach, Las Vegas and Hawaii. Page 47 May 2015 By Kassidy McDonald On February 7, 2015 Van Dyke Laser & Skin hosted their 30th Anniversary Open House bene fi tting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The open house featured live music, door prizes, presentations, lectures about the latest procedures in cosmetic dermatology and a silent auction. This year, the open house had 200 people in attendance and raised over $15,000, which will be donated to JDRF Arizona. The event, which has now bene fi tted JDRF for 10 years, has raised over $100,000 for local charities such as JDRF, Susan G. Komen and American Heart Association. The JDRF organization has bene fi ted from the open house since Susan Van Dyke’s son, Brian, was diagnosed with type-1 diabetes at 21 years old. Van Dyke said, “When Brian was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, our lives changed and I really wanted to help support the cause because I had such a strong connection to it.” Now 26, Brian hopes JDRF can help find the cure for T1D. Van Dyke is determined to help Brian and everyone else diagnosed with diabetes in the search for the cure. According to the JDRF website, around 3 million Americans may have T1D and around 80 people a day are diagnosed with it. Their mission statement says, “JDRF’s research goal is to discover, develop and deliver advances that progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D.” Aside from her charity work, Van Dyke is a worldwide leader in dermatology and travels year-round to give lectures and expert advice and opinions to physicians on new cosmetic procedures. She has lectured in countries such as Dubai, Korea, Hong Kong, Brazil and many others.
