Page 14 May 2015 By Christina Surrano Teaching is a demanding job that attracts a special breed of people. These people are often motivated by a passion to make a positive impact on future generations.in spite of the tremendous demands and challenges that come with the job. So when Arcadia mom, Kerry Schulman, nominated Ingleside teacher, Erin Kadera, for the Arcadia News Teachers We Love award, stating, “I have never seen a teacher so dedicated to her job, her students and her school,” one might wonder what it takes to stand out among such a particularly committed group. Kadera’s career with the Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District began 18 years ago. She worked for fi ve years as an instructional assistant in a preschool, before moving to a position in the district of fi ce managing federal programs as a grant specialist. She did this all while raising her children and fi nishing her post-secondary education. Eight years ago, she completed her teacher certi fi cation and took a teaching position at the same school her children had attended and where she fi rst started as an instructional assistant, Hohokam Traditional School. Her dedication to the students and families earned her great affection and made such an impression on the then assistant principal, Dan Craddock, that upon his retirement, he urged her to set her sites on a new goal. He told her that the great things she does in the classroom every day should not be limited to just the students in the room. She remembers him saying, “You really need to put yourself in a position where you can impact an entire school.” Not long after receiving Craddock’s council, Hohokam’s principal, Chad Caudle took a position at Ingleside Middle School. Kadera believed so much in Caudle’s leadership that she requested to move as well. After being at Ingleside for two years, she said, “I feel very blessed that I have been able to build such great relationships in such a short period of time. I feel like I have the relationships with people [at Ingleside] that I had at Hohokam. It’s amazing to me.” Nominating parent, Kerry Schulman, speculates that Kadera doesn’t sleep as she not only makes herself available for her students before school, during lunch and after school, but she is also always available – early or late – for parents. While putting in long hours of work for Ingleside, Kadera has also spent those two years earning her master’s degree. Kadera is now ready to follow the sage advice of her former assistant principal. She has accepted a position as assistant principal at Navajo Elementary School, where she can indeed extend her reach, impacting the lives of the students and families in an entire school. Ms. Kadera’s class was surprised and excited as their teacher was given the Arcadia News Teachers We Love award. Ms. Kadera has taught at Ingleside for two years. Page 15 May 2015 By Rachael Bouley Jennifer Rzepecki was a woman on a mission. It all started in March 2014, when the busy mom set out to make the perfect cup of coffee. After numerous trips to Starbucks and every fast food drive-thru in town, Jennifer was left unsatis fi ed with her options for coffee, so she decided to make her own, putting her passion for cooking and creativity to good use. It was in her kitchen that she fi rst brewed her coffee for 24 hours, using a unique blend of spices to create her perfect cup of iced coffee, which became “Mama’s Cold Brew.” “I decided to play around a bit with the spices and put them in the actual grind of the coffee, and it happened to work really well,” Jennifer said. She gave her coffee to her friends and family, and after hearing their positive feedback, she served her drink to over 200 people at a church event. The unique blend of spices sets her iced coffee apart from others, especially when paired with her signature creamer, sweet vanilla cream. Many people who took a sip of her coffee encouraged her to sell it. Motivated by the incredible response, Jennifer decided to go for it, thinking that she could use the extra income to pay for a housecleaner. She signed up to participate in the Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market in May 2014. With the help of her friends and family, Jennifer’s coffee – now called Mama’s Cold Brew and packaged in Mason jars – made a successful showing at the market, only six weeks after she started her company. “It was a huge launching pad for us and a lot of opportunities just fell into place,” Jennifer said. Since then, what began as a quest to fi nd a delicious cup of coffee has transformed into a full-time job, thanks to the support of the community and her family. Throughout much of 2014, Jennifer was pregnant with her fourth child, yet she still managed to participate in numerous events and farmers markets in an effort to share Mama’s Cold Brew with others in the Valley. Her husband was always on hand to help her set up for weekend events. She and her team began providing coffee for bridal showers, baby showers and private parties as well. A year later, she has her hands full but she is learning to balance her family of four children, all under fi ve, with the growing demands of the business. The success of the last year has been such a welcome surprise for her. “My joke is that the business started on me, I didn’t really start the business,” she said. In the future, Jennifer hopes to open her own location in central Phoenix. “We are just along for the ride,” she said. “Who knows where we will go in the future!” — For more information visit mamascoldbrew.com.
