Page 48 April 2015 By Nicholas Smith The typical atmosphere at a Grid Iron Flag Football game in Arcadia is similar to that of a party. The fields at Tavan Elementary, where the games are played, usually have multiple competitions going at once, with upbeat music playing over loudspeakers and children and adults yelling encouragement. “The whole goal is for the kids to have un,” said Katrina Alfaro. “We want to deliver a positive youth sports experience with better coaching and player development, while keeping families excited about youth sports.” Alfaro and her husband, David, are at the head of Grid Iron Flag Football in Arcadia. Under the umbrella of One Sports Nation, hey launched the first season for the flag ootball league, on January 10. The league had 17 teams, and each one wore the uniform of an actual NFL team. “My husband and I have been involved in youth sports for a long time,” said Alfaro. “We have two sons who are 11 and 5, and we have been involved in all of their teams. We love kids and sports, so this really combines our true passions.” One of the most important aspects of the eague to the Alfaros is the idea of encouraging words from everyone during the games. Yelling and cursing are not tolerated and Katrina reminds the parents and kids of that over a loudspeaker every hour. “Sports get competitive and sometimes parents say things that they don’t mean,” said Alfaro. “You can’t stop everything from happening, but we like to remind everyone often. We compete in this league but we also keep it fun.” The Grid Iron league has real kickoffs and real punts during games. The Alfaros believe that special teams are an important part of the game, no matter the age group or the type of football being played. “Special teams is a huge part of football,” said Alfaro. “It brings a whole different aspect to the game and we think it’s important for kids to learn the fundamentals at a young age.” The winter football season ended for Grid Iron on February 28, but running a sports league has just begun for the Alfaros. One Sports Nation gives them the ability to offer spring and fall football seasons, as well as basketball, soccer and baseball leagues. Alfaro is hopeful that indoor basketball will be next up for Arcadia. “We want this to be less cutthroat than other leagues,” said Alfaro. “But at the same time, we still want the kids to compete. It’s about being a personable league and building relationships with all the families who participate.” Grid Iron looks to provide competition and fun for kids
