Page 23 By Lisa Weisenburger The Musical Instrument Museum was the destination for our musically themed day off of school. I have tried to visit this museum since it opened, but until now I haven’t been able to convince my offspring that this is a fascinating place to while away the day. Let me say this: It was awesome! The museum is truly a global collection of fascinating instruments. Many of the instruments – there are over 6,000 of them – we have never seen before, and even if we did happen upon them, we probably would be surprised that making music was their primary function. The MIM has musical instrument collections from over 200 countries and territories. The audio devices that are included in the admission price allowed us to hear many of the instruments as well as watch video of the instruments being played in their original environments. The clearly state-of-the-art technology used at the MIM is pretty interesting juxtaposed with the ancient instruments. The docents at the MIM were friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about each of the galleries they were tasked with staffing. Hoping to keep the kids engrossed in the experience so I could wander and read myself, I asked the docents one Meet me at the MIM or two questions about their space that the kids could answer through touring and listening. We created a modified scavenger hunt that was spontaneous and educational. Can you find the drum that is over 4,000 years old in the special exhibition, “Beyond the Beat: Drums of the World”? There is a drum made out of a human skull, so from what is the drum face made? The answer: specially cured human skin! You may expect to find the Beatles represented at the MIM. Maybe even Elvis Presley. Would you expect to find Taylor Swift at the MIM? The Artists Gallery features concert outfits, videos from past performances, and of course noteworthy musicians’ instruments. Here’s one: How did Doug “Cosmo” Clifford – the drummer from Creedence Clearwater Revival – change the foot pedal of the drum to withstand his intense concert performances without breaking? The Experience Gallery was the last gallery we visited, completely on purpose. The entire family can make some noise! This gallery is loud. I loved that the sounds coming from this room were that of experimentation, trial and error, practicing rhythm and the giggling joy that comes from striking the huge gong. Give yourself some time to visit this treasure of a museum. We were there for about 2 1/2 hours and could have stayed at least another hour. One last thing, if you’ve lived in Arizona or the Southwest for any length of time, don’t skip through the first part of the United States and Canada geographical gallery. We were surprised to learn how much our region has contributed to the musical instrument scene. What you will need: • packing or masking tape • unsharpened pencil • 2 small paper plates or a plastic container with a lid • hot glue • 14- to 20-inch string • 2 beads • stapler • markers, stickers or decorative paper The process: • Securely tape the pencil to the inside of one paper plate. If you’re using a plastic container, pierce a small hole in the side of the container and slide the pencil in, secure with hot glue. • Thread one end of the string through one bead and tie. Repeat with the other end of the string, securing the second bead. • Lay the string across the center of the other paper plate, securing it with tape or staples. If using a container, lay the string across the middle of the opening and secure it by putting on the lid.Staple or tape the second paper plate to the first. Tightly secure the pencil too, creating the drum. If using a container, tape around the circumference of the container, securing the beads. • Decorate your drum with stickers, markers or decorative paper. • You are ready to make some noise!
