Page 8 February 2015 By Steven Sarkis One of Arizona’s great annual events for military veterans is called Maricopa County StandDown. Now in its 14th year, Arizona StandDown is the state’s largest outreach event for military veterans. This year the event will be held February 12-14 at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Stadium at the State Fairgrounds. They are anticipating seeing over 2,000 veterans. Last year’s event helped thousands of veterans with jobs, medical issues, education, court cases, clothing, eye glasses, haircuts and even pet care. Among the entities involved were the Phoenix VA Health Care System, Arizona Department of Housing, Social Security Administration, the Maricopa County Justice Courts and the Motor Vehicle Division, to name a few. In an effort to help these veterans get back on their feet, the MVD issued over cards. The VA gave 150 eye consultations and issued 550 reading glasses. Children of homeless vets were given clothing, toys and school supplies. The court system helped 931 veterans sort out their legal StandDown helps veterans get back on their feet issues and helped to close those pesky court cases once and for all. Female veterans even received chair massages and clothing, along with a consultation from a Mary Kay representative to educate them about contemporary makeup designs and fashions. Volunteers from Great Clips were on hand to provide over 500 haircuts. And lastly, among all the other great things this event does for vets, it also takes care of their pets. Last year, the event gave food, supplies and shots to over 643 dogs and cats, one guinea pig and a tortoise, named Tortellini. It is also worth mentioning that Maricopa County StandDown is now a part of the Arizona Dollar-for-Dollar Charitable Tax Credit program, in which Arizona taxpayers can get their donations back as a dollar-for-dollar tax credit. All in all, this event is an example of how Arizona and Maricopa County are constantly striving to help military veterans and their families.
