Page 47 February 2015 The Little Spark – local author encourages creativity By Amanda Goossen For Arcadia resident Carrie Bloomston, the spark that ignited her lifelong creativity was her parents. “I grew up in a crazy supportive family,” said Carrie. “When it came to anything creative, their answer was always yes.” A longtime abstract painter, Carrie attended the Rhode Island School of Design. She and her husband owned a years until the economy crashed in 2008. “We were both kind of done with the business anyway, anxious to move on,” said Carrie. Carrie’s husband went back to school to become a therapist; Carrie however, had dreams of her own. “I was pregnant and had a huge desire to sew,” said Carrie. “I went down the block to Bernina and took some classes. I started with the desire to make reusable lunch bags.” Before long Carrie’s art background began to show. Other patrons of the local sewing shop convinced her to look into creating a business and selling her patterns. “I went to a local art show and was so warmly welcomed,” said Carrie. “It was an amazing experience.” As if a snowball effect had begun, Windham Fabrics called Carrie with an exciting offer. A family-run fabric company from the east coast, Windham has been a leader in the fabric industry since 1955. They were calling to ask this Arizona artist to design their fabric. “I get to paint and it becomes fabric,” said Carrie. “It’s so much fun.” Before long, publishers were contacting Carrie asking her to write a book. They were requesting a sewing book. “I knew I wasn’t doing a sewing book,” said Carrie. “I knew I wanted to do something about being creative.” Carrie knew the book she could create would be in the same vein in which her parents had raised her. She wanted to be the creative support for others. Carrie explains that while her book isn’t a self-help book, it actually is kind of a self-help book. “The creative spark is in everyone,” said Carrie. “It just needs to be ignited.” Carrie explains that her book helps ignite the spark dimmed by stress, anxiety and other uninspiring facts of life. “This book is the attempt to return to the innate creativity we are all born with,” said Carrie. Beginning with a bright cover Carrie’s book The Little Spark – 30 Ways to Ignite Your Creativity is not only a helpful tool to motivate and excite the innovative side of the brain, it is also a treat upon which to gaze. One can spend hours looking at the breathtaking photography by Jill McNamara, as well as the intricate detail of the book’s graphic design. Carrie’s 30 ways to ignite creativity work to encourage and excite readers. questions that get the mind moving, bringing even the least creative of us all to think. inspiration?” Carrie asks her readers. And she instructs to “be brave” and “shine your inner light.” “I wrote most of this book in our tree fort in our backyard,” said Carrie. “I hope the message comes through.” ! book go to: such-designs.com.
