Page 34 February 2015 Musician brings stage experience into the classroom By Larissa Garza By day, band director and teacher, Adam Roberts helps his students grow musically and shine on the stage. But when school lets out, it is Roberts who takes the stage – sharing his infectious love of music far beyond the walls of the classroom. As a teaching artist at public charter Arizona School for the Arts in downtown Phoenix, Tenor Saxophonist Roberts incorporates his real-world advanced jazz and performance experience into the classroom every day. In return, the students bring inspiration and new ideas to Roberts in his own musical career. Roberts is like most faculty members at ASA – teachers by day and artists by night. The school hires these working artists to teach their craft to the next generation of students, and in return, the teaching musicians, dancers and actors enjoy a stable career in the arts, which can be “I love this school because it has a high attention to quality art,” Roberts said. “The students keep my foot in the door of relevance and that’s what is so great about youthful energy – you can always see how enthusiastic they are.” ASA, which is free and open to students around the Valley, has an innovative model in education. The school concentrates on college preparation, but immerses students in two hours of performing arts every day, including dance, music and theater. The school employs more than 36 teaching artists. “The experience of our teaching artists is an experience you cannot duplicate,” said ASA’s Head of School and CEO Leah Fregulia Roberts. “It motivates and inspires the students and they know how lucky they are.” Fregulia Roberts said ASA students perform about 60 performances each year, including some for premier organizations in the Valley. The students also attend at least three Valley performances, which sometimes even feature their teachers. “It’s exciting because the students can be in the classroom with their teachers one day and then watching them perform the next,” Fregulia Roberts said. Adam Roberts, in particular, is a faculty member who has had many prominent community performances. Locally, he has performed at jazz club The Nash and with many local groups including Sonoran Jazz Project and The Doublers Collective, as well as his own groups, Mr. Trio and the Adam Roberts Quartet. On the national level, he has performed with prominent musicians at festivals and events around the country, is active in composition and transcription and has had music recorded on albums with prominent jazz musicians. One Arcadia resident and student, senior Lucille Berk, has been especially inspired by having Roberts as her instructor. In fact, he is one of the primary reasons she continues to pursue her dreams. in music. He’s one of the main reasons that I auditioned for All State Jazz and that I got in,” Lucille said. “He’s very good at explaining concepts and is always willing to spend time after class to help a student in need.” Lucille’s mother, Sharon Berk, said her daughter wanted to pursue music since seventh grade and around that time, started at the school she could only play one instrument, but now she plays the clarinet and saxophone, Sharon said. “The teachers there just grab onto her enthusiasm,” Sharon said. “She’s playing in several bands now and it has opened up a world of music in Phoenix to her.” Professional musician Adam Roberts works with students at Arizona School for the Arts. arcadianews.com Jimmy Vercellino MORTGAGE ORIGINATOR AND U.S.M.C.
