Knowing the signs of a heart attack can be critical to getting the care you need and could save your life. Here are 10 facts about heart attacks you might not know: 1. Time is muscle. Heart attacks start when arteries are blocked and the heart muscle stops receiving oxygen. The longer the heart muscle goes without oxygen, the more tissue dies. The sooner you get to the hospital, the better your chance of survival and recovery. 2. It’s not like in the movies. Not all heart attacks come in sudden, sharp bursts of pain. Most heart attacks start slowly with a gradual increase in discomfort. Know the signs, and get emergency care quickly. 3. It’s a women’s issue, too. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, according to the American Heart Association.       heart attack symptoms. Men tend to feel pain down their left arm, in their left shoulder or up to their chin when they have an attack. 5. Women’s symptoms are subtler. Women can feel pain in either arm and in their shoulder blades, and also experience nausea or indigestion. Back and jaw pain are also common in women. 6. It’s not just pain. If you feel sudden shortness of breath, nausea, cold sweats or anxiety for more than 2 minutes, call 911 immediately. You might be having a heart attack.    Discuss with your doctor if a daily low-dose aspirin      reduce the risk for cardiovascular events in at-risk patients. 8. Learn your risk. Schedule an appointment with your doctor to know your risk, assess your health and determine whether an aspirin regimen is best for you. 9. No more cigarettes. Stopping smoking can cut your risk of developing coronary heart disease by 50 percent. 10. Take a hike. A simple 30-minute daily walk can lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and more. These meetings are always open to the public, and public comment is allowed at the beginning of every meeting.
