Page 44 January 2015 Ellis Island comes to Hopi By Christina Surrano Photo by NTK Photography Imagine for a moment what the reality of arrival to Ellis Island was like in the 1900s. The third-grade teachers at Hopi Elementary School wanted to recreate that reality with an interactive experience that was a culmination of the students’ thematic lessons and heritage studies. They worked as a team to design a grade- wide Ellis Island Day. Students were instructed to collect information beforehand about their own family heritage, and then reenacted what their family’s immigration process may have been like. They had stories of where they were from, what their lives had been like before, and reasons for coming to America. Costumed students, carrying passports and bags of sparse belongings, stood in lines for processing through passports, interview, medical, baggage and transportation. Costumed parent volunteers, who played the parts of the students. Students were asked not only facts about their heritage, geography and language, but also what they were going to do for a living, where they were going to live and how they were going to get there. Some immigrants had even deported. A few immigrants also experienced the occasional arbitrary The time spent waiting was also spent learning as students had to answer were given. They were asked to document their feelings as well. Some were angry to be an authentic part of the ordeal. While waiting in line in the interview room, reenacting immigrant Ben Rush shared with Arcadia News that his family came to Ellis Island from Hungary in 1931, “Right when Hitler took power. They knew that they needed to catch a boat outta there, so…caught one. Bam. Out!” Arcadia News said, “Just to tell you, I’m really savin’ up my strength for this [interview]. I don’t want to get detained.” Students will follow up this exciting interactive event with a discussion, which they do daily in support of each topic within the cultural thematic unit. Strict protocol on student involvement and how points and counterpoints are raised and supported are taught and followed. Students, parents and teachers shared positive reactions to Ellis Island Day, which may be adopted as an annual event.
