Page 42 January 2015 Canada calling – coffee, border towns and zombies By Kaley Kalil This fall, Arcadia residents Fae and Bill Sowders traveled to Vancouver, Canada, to attend a work colleague’s a rental car took them across the border into Canada. “We made a day of [the drive] and stopped in small towns along the way to check out food and local shops,” Fae said. One particular town they fancied was Port Townsend, “It was great for wine, food and local shopping,” Fae added. In addition to attending their colleague’s retirement party in Vancouver, the Sowders sauntered through Stanley Park and around its encompassing stone seawall. They toured the Vancouver Olympic Village, walked along English Bay, gazed out at seaplanes coming and going and enjoyed shopping downtown. HAPPY NEW YEAR! They visited the original Starbucks (opened in 1971), admired the Seattle Great Wheel (a giant Ferris wheel at Pier 57 on Elliot Bay), and gazed out at the Space Needle (an observation tower in Seattle that Northwest). Although Bill travels to Canada often Seattle and Vancouver. “It was so green and beautiful… My favorite was Seattle. I loved Pike Marketplace; it was candy for my senses ! cheese, waterfront views… I did not want to leave,” she said. “It is one of my favorite cities and I wanted to show Fae Vancouver and Seattle. The fall is a perfect time of year to visit the Northwest,” Bill said. Fae, an immigration attorney who grew up on the El Paso-Juárez border, frequently crossed into Juárez for dining, fun and service projects. “There is a huge difference between the two borders,” she said comparatively about her hometown and the northwestern U.S.-Canada border. “The border between the twin cities of El Paso and Juárez can be described as grey, concrete, tall fences, chaotic with pedestrians crossing and peddlers begging.” “In contrast, the Canadian border was green, well manicured, fenceless, sterile and not chaotic. There was quite a difference between the two.” One day, while the Sowders were taking a stroll near the Vancouver Art Museum, they stumbled across Vancouver’s Annual Zombie Run. “Hundreds of zombies transcend onto the streets of Vancouver to roam around the city and ham it up for the cameras. It was eye-popping!” Fae said. The Sowders stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Vancouver throughout their trip, and would highly recommend this hotel to other travelers. “We love adventures,” Fae said. “We love to see and experience new things together. We have been to many places and countries together and hope to go to many more. One of our favorite adventures was going to China on our honeymoon, and Havasupai with both our children and dearest friends. We are looking forward to many more adventures near and far.” Next up on the Sowders’ travel list is a family vacation to Washington, D.C. in the spring. They will take their three daughters with them: Mia, 11, Riley, 10 and Quinn, 8. “Bill and I met while we were going to law school [there] together,” Fae said. “We are excited to go back to see the city, our school and to show the girls.”
