Page 28 January 2015 Garden interest growing By Amanda Goossen This school year Ingleside Middle School was awarded the talents of one of Arcadia’s most well-known and beloved gardeners, Barbara Halden. Halden is responsible for helping many in the community. She gave Hopi Elementary School the knowledge to create a garden and physically participated in every phase of the construction, education and longevity of the garden. At Ingleside, Halden worked to establish not only a school garden but an after school garden club where students participate in planting seasonal crops, harvest and collect seeds from the garden plants. “Ms. Leonard [the school PE teacher] and I received a grant from the Western Growers Foundation for the garden and nutrition education,” said Halden. “Ms. Leonard writes a cookbook with her students and comes out to help with planting in the garden.” In addition to planting, harvesting and cooking, the students will also sell many of their items at the Arcadia Farmers’ Market one Sunday morning a month. The Arcadia Farmers’ Market was started two years ago with the schools in mind, giving a portion of the proceeds back to neighborhood schools. In December, the Ingleside Garden Club “Our students had a lot of fun talking to our customers and explaining what they were selling,” said Halden. “They had to decide about the prices of the product and make sure they exchanged the right amount of money with the customers. There was ample time to walk around and visit with the other vendors and exchange information, and even sample some of the other great products at the market.” The goal for the Ingleside Garden Club is to sell produce and other products at least once a month at the Arcadia Market. Students will continue to learn about what is involved in running a market and continue hands-on garden work, cooking and nutrition classes. Myofascial Release Specialist John F.
