Page 25 January 2015 St. Theresa embraces tech By Larissa Garza St. Theresa Catholic School’s physical education program is now using iPads to bring together math, technology and physical activity. Coach Kathy Putta is in charge of the has utilized iPads in her physical education classes. “It’s really fun to see how it shifts the way they look at things,” said Coach Kathy. Some of the activities for which the students can use the iPads include: recording videos of choreography to teach activity, scavenger hunts and even timing activities. Coach Kathy said that it has changed how the students interact and it helps the students teach one another. “The girls have to choreograph a dance and teach it to the class and they get graded on how well it goes. When they record themselves, they can see if they are in sync or not, rather than just being told,” said the coach. Coach Kathy said that since there was an to integrate them into her class. “I found ideas on Twitter. It’s easy. I can pull up videos of activities and they can see examples from multiple views and it’s much clearer to the students.” The P.E. department, along with the science department at St. Theresa’s are working on a grant to get heart monitors for the students. This will allow students and teachers to observe the students’ heart rates. “No one will know who each individual is on the monitor, so it does not discourage students. That way they keep getting better and better,” said Coach Kathy. The goal of this grant is to see if physical activity can increase cognitive functioning in students. This will be measured by memory tests before and after physical activity and the numbers will be tracked for a few weeks. “It would be a great opportunity for the students.” Thomas Rd.
