Page 18 January 2015 Arcadia’s citrus gleaning By Heidi Jaenicke Arcadia’s abundance of citrus gives those in need access to fresh produce, thanks to generous residents and several diligent Valley organizations. Citrus gleaning is necessary, especially for those who cannot get outdoors and prune their own trees. When too many fruits pile up in a yard it attracts roof rats, a common pest that loves to snack on rotten oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes and other seasonal fruits. This is the 14th consecutive year that the Arcadia Citrus Program will hold their Super Citrus Saturdays. The citrus collection service takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon between January 24 and March 28 at the Scottsdale Elks Lodge, located at 6398 E. Oak St. Originally started in 1999 as a Boy Scouts of America service project, the Arcadia Citrus Program distributes local produce to food banks, Native American tribes, senior centers, local churches and the Maricopa      Organizations that help gather produce include the St. Mary’s Food Bank, Arcadia Water Company, Sun Growers Juicing, North Phoenix Baptist Church and Bashas’. Due to the high demand in citrus gleaning needs, the registration for the program is limited to area codes 85018, 85251, 85351, 85373, 85374 and 85375. The last day to enroll for gleaning services was on December 19, 2014. If you missed the deadline, there’s still an opportunity for you to donate your produce. If you want to assist those in the Arcadia neighborhood, elderly              helping hand.
