Page 54 December 2 0 1 4 Boy Scout year-end review By Casey Greene For many years (since 1934), Boy Scout Troop 6 has done service projects and given back to the community. Troop 6 is the local Arcadia troop, and for the past nine months our Scouts have done service projects that benefit Arcadia and the area around it. Our biggest service projects are the Eagle projects. These range from building a trail to helping create a school garden. Troop 6 has one of the largest numbers of Eagle Scouts in Arizona, so naturally there will be a ton of Eagle projects. In the past nine months, our Scouts have completed 10 Eagle projects. Take a look at how Troop 6 is serving Arcadia residents. Let’s start at the beginning of 2014. Jacob Staudenmaier’s Eagle project was at Shemer Art Center. We planted an orchard and put down mulch, beautifying the grounds and donating needed supplies Boy Scout Troop 6 Inventory Adjusters 3437 E. Two weeks later, Dallas Greene completed another Eagle project at the Pioneer Living History Museum where we built a wheelchair ramp, refurbished decks and the gold panning area. Austin Suder also did a project at the museum, designing and building a working gallows that has become a hit for school children and wedding parties alike. At the Pioneer Living History Museum they serve over 25,000 school kids every year, so Greene and Suder’s projects benefits our community greatly because this museum is a fun way to teach children about the history of Arizona. Other Scouts chose to do projects that gave back to education in the Arcadia area. Ethan Lipson’s Eagle project was at Tempe Solel Preschool. Max McCauley’s project gave back to our very own Ingleside Middle School. We helped build garden beds, add irrigation, planted a tree and put in a plaque for a previous student. Lastly, Carter Chamberlain, a student at Arcadia High School, gave back to his school by making improvements to the robotics club facilities. The other four Eagle projects helped the community in other ways. Cedrick Lorch’s improved the grounds at the Phoenix Boys’ Choir. Wesley Spencer’s chose to hold his Eagle project at Handlebar Helpers. They took apart bikes to be rebuilt and held a bike drive, netting over 30 bikes. Will Moody’s Eagle project was completed at General Cooks Trail where Troop 6 refurbished a mile and a half of the trail. Riley Johnson just finished building a tortoise and iguana habitat at the Animal Welfare League, one of the largest no-kill shelters in Arizona, for his Eagle project. Troop 6 has given back to their community in many ways through their various Eagle projects! The successes mentioned above are just the ones done this year. Our tradition of service is a source of pride to our troop, and growth for our Scouts. We think the “season of giving” should last all year!
