By Larissa Garza Arcadia residents have teamed up to fundraise for Prince of Peace Preschool teacher, Susan Keller, who was diagnosed with cancer in her back. Keller has been diagnosed with cancer four times since 2002 including breast, lymph nodes, liver and now most recently, her back. Since her cancer returned, Keller has found new treatments that have worked for her through the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Chicago. However, since it is out-of-state treatment, the costs are much more expensive. “Insurance covers some, but it is still incredibly expensive,” said Keller. Keller said she hopes this is the last time that she will have to go through remission. Keller has been teaching at the Prince of Peace Preschool for over 20 years. In order to help cover the funds, Jenifer Swisher, a parent of two students who attended Prince of Peace Preschool, has organized a fundraiser to help fund these treatments for Keller. “She’s already fighting cancer, the last thing she needs to worry about is the finances that go with it,” said Swisher. Swisher said she was amazed at the fact that Keller still comes to work with a smile despite going through chemotherapy. “She’s given so much to our community Community unites for teacher’s fourth fight with cancer and our kids. You just want to help a person like that. The Arcadia community is very powerful,” said Swisher. Many other residents have lent a helping hand, including one of Keller’s coworkers, Gretchen Baumgardner. One of Baumgardner’s daughters, Olivia, fought cancer at the same time as Keller four years ago and although she never taught Olivia, they formed a lasting bond, said Baumgardner. “She truly loves being at school. The kids lift her up and she just has the biggest smile regardless of the financial lows,” said Baumgardner. Swisher encourages anyone who is able to donate to Keller, please do. However, if money is tight, prayers are just as impactful to Keller, said Swisher. “She needs the emotional support as well. She is not fighting this alone,” said Swisher. So far, the fundraiser has raised over $5,000 towards Keller’s medical expenses, but the hope is to raise over $20,000, said Swisher. “I have a very strong faith and it has carried me through all of this. It gives me a lot of comfort,” said Teacher Keller.
