Page 52 November 2014 ARCADIA SPORTS Sophomore golfer hoping for top ten state finish this year By Nicholas Smith Madison Voisard says her goal for this golf season is to get back to state. Going to the state tournament is a lofty goal for most high school athletes and it would seem to be especially hard to achieve for a sophomore. But Madison isn’t an average sophomore. And she didn’t misspeak when she said “back to state.” “She was one of only six freshmen to make it to state last year,” said Kim Voisard, Madison’s mom. “She finished 23 out of 65 kids, the highest of the freshmen. She’s hoping for a top ten finish this year.” Madison only started playing golf around four years ago. She started playing through The First Tee of Phoenix, a nonprofit organization that allows youth around the Valley to have access to golfing facilities. According to their website, The First Tee’s goal is to provide young people with character-building and life lessons through golf. The instructors and the community made a huge difference to Madison. “I loved my coaches and the friends I made,” she said. “The community was my favorite part. And then I liked that I got better and better.” Golf isn’t the only sport that Madison plays at Arcadia High School. She was on the basketball team last year and said she enjoyed it. But she isn’t sure if she will return to the court this season, because she wants to join the school baseball team. There currently are no girls on Arcadia’s varsity baseball team but this doesn’t seem to faze Madison. “She’s not scared,” said Kim. “She just wants a shot. She doesn’t want any favoritism, just a fair chance.” Madison’s desire to go against the boys may be part of her genetic makeup. Kim played professional baseball for the Colorado Silver Bullets, an all- female professional baseball team that barnstormed against all-star men’s teams. She also won a gold medal with the US National Team in 2004. “Madison is passionate about whatever she does,” said Kim. “As a parent I want to help her find what she loves the most, so she can put the most effort into that to be successful.” Although she is a multi-sport athlete, golf is what Madison hopes to play primarily in the future. She has long-term plans to play the sport in college, then to play professionally. And of course, she’s talking about the PGA. “I’d like to go to college and play golf there first,” she said. “After that I’d like to play on the PGA Tour. I want to play against the best.” “She can do whatever she wants to do,” said Kim. “I always tell her, if you put in your part, work as hard as you can, and give your best, God will take care of the rest.” look good. feel good. be happy.
