A big 2015 Honda Accord Honda Fleet Manager 2015 Honda Accord Local chefs demonstrate healthy cooking for ANLC kids By Christina Surrano Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center students enjoyed a unique and healthy post-workout snack prepared by local award-winning chefs. Every Wednesday morning the Roaring Jaguars of ANLC gather in the courtyard, under open skies, for in-person morning announcements, poetry readings and dance warm-ups followed by a “walk for wellness,” as it is touted. The walk on September 16 was covered by News Channel 3 and followed by a healthy snack generously provided by chefs Charleen Badman and Sacha Levine of FnB Restaurant. The cooperative Chef in the Garden program at ANLC rotates their interactive events through the different grades, and this time, it was the fifth- and sixth-graders turn. It took place in one of several garden courtyards on campus, among the growing fruits, herbs and veggies. The menu was anything but typical. Brilliantly hued and thinly sliced quick-pickled vegetables, pickled apple wedges, cheese and multigrain crackers were plated for excited and adventuresome students. Some seemed surprised by how much When asked what their favorite typical snack was, Gaby and her friends listed Cheez-Its and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos as the top two, but the majority agreed that they preferred the provided snack. Delilah Defibaugh declared, “The veggies, are better, especially because you know that you made them yourself.” Chef Levine was not surprised by the general positive reaction. “Quick pickles tend to be very mild.” Students also made their own pickled apples to take home in reusable mason jars along with the printed recipe. Chef Badman stated that she always relates the snack to what is growing in Chef Charleen Badman, co-owner of FnB Restaurant recently spent the morning in the ANLC garden with the school’s Chef in the Garden program. they liked the snacks. After biting into a pickled apple wedge, Gabby Pierson exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! There’s vinegar on here. That’s really, really good!” the garden. There are currently pickling vegetables like okra growing as well as an apple tree. “Pickling is big with gardening,” explained, chef Levine, who has a reputation for making fabulous pickles. Page 45 November 2 0 1 4 Community specialist fills gap for parents and teachers By Mallory Gleich Ask any of the 780 students at Ingleside Middle School who Chayito Hernandez is and chances are, you’ll get a multitude of different answers. She might be known as the lady checking to make sure a student’s homework gets done, or helping a family in a time of need. Hernandez may wear many hats, but at Ingleside, she is known as the community specialist. As the community specialist, Hernandez serves to bridge the gap between teachers and families, especially those whose primary language is Spanish. Many Spanish-speaking families feel they are unable to fully engage in their child’s educational success because of the language barrier – Hernandez is there to break down that barrier. Hernandez not only serves as an interpreter to the 230 Spanish-speaking families that are a part of Ingleside, but is also there to assist lower-income families with any help she can offer. Ingleside Middle School is a Title I school, which means that financial assistance is provided to the institution to help with low-income families. Around 40 percent of the students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches. A number of families have had to move out of the area and students are unable to take the district school buses to and from school. Hernandez is also involved in parents’ lives outside of the classroom. She teaches English-language classes twice a week, and after the school’s fall break she will offer parenting classes once a month. Service Learning students from the surrounding high schools and a local nonprofit organization called Feed Our Babies USA are coordinating the drive. Fox Restaurant Concepts is also helping with the drive. Along with the Thanksgiving meal drive, Hernandez also has a Christmas toy and clothing drive in the works. For the past three years, Chayito Hernandez has been an essential part of Ingleside Middle School and an important individual to the surrounding communities.
