Page 44 September 2014 Arcadia News columnist takes a trip across the country By Kaley Kalil Amanda Savage, a local marketing professional and columnist for Arcadia News , recently ventured cross-country in her Smart car to attend a four-day music festival in Manchester, Tennessee. A total of eight days and roughly 1,700 miles each way carried Savage and her boyfriend, Jon Vishnevsky, through Nashville, Albuquerque, Little Rock and ‹" ‹ for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. “It’s one of the country’s largest & experience,” Savage said. “There were cars from all over the country, [but] we were the only Arizona plates we found. People traveled [from] as far as Australia to attend it.” Savage and Vishnevsky enjoyed a Q&A session with the Farley Brothers, as well as performances by Elton John and Jack White. “I loved the energy at Bonnaroo; everyone was friendly and positive. It was like a little utopia,” she said. Although the festival was the main reason for their journey, they enjoyed several stops along the way. These included drinks on Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Citywalk, a stroll down Memphis’ famous Beale Street, and a visit to the city’s Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. “Driving a Smart car through rural # got some looks,” Savage said. “We hit some storms, and the idea of being in a Smart car when a tornado hit was not comforting.” On the return trip home, they enjoyed the beautiful drive through Missouri and Arkansas. They visited the Ozarks and the Mark Twain National Forest, and stayed at one of America’s most haunted hotels – the 1886 Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Over an extended Fourth of July weekend, they ventured to Lake Powell in Page, Arizona for a camping trip, where Savage enjoyed a guided kayak tour from the lake into world- renowned Antelope Canyon. “Just the solitude on the water surrounded by so much natural beauty was really great,” she said. They also squeezed in a consecutive trip to Zion National Park near Springdale, Utah, about a two-hour drive from Lake Powell. Here, they hiked The Narrows – a picturesque gorge in the upper portion of Zion Canyon 16 miles long and up to 2,000 feet deep, carved by the Virgin River. “It’s a pretty intimidating hike, because if it rains, and _ _" $ anywhere for people to escape to and you can pretty much die,” Savage said. At times, she chose to swim through the river’s deeper depths rather than hike over loose rocks in the shallow areas. }’ walking stick, and pick shoes that are durable and can get wet,” she advised. Savage hopes to visit New York City in the near future to enjoy its food, culture, entertainment and history. “Nature is kind of my escape. The smell of Zion was crisp, clean air and it was quiet, with the sound of running water everywhere we went. I don’t do a lot of camping in Phoenix, although I would like to explore Northern Arizona more. Havasupai Falls is on my list for next year’s adventures,” she said. This month, Savage will visit family in Ohio. Traveled lately? Email Kaley: kaley@ arcadianews.com. CONNECT WITH DR. KARBASI’S STORY AT MIHS.ORG/CARE After graduating from medical school, Dr. Karbasi had the choice of any hospital in the world to continue his training – he chose Maricopa Integrated Health System. And he’s not alone. Hundreds of doctors have chosen MIHS because the teaching physicians here are nationally renowned. And it’s through their leadership the residents can push themselves to be the very best doctors and nurses they can be. But what we’re most proud of is that a majority of the doctors that complete the program stay in Maricopa County. That’s a choice we are all healthier for. “It’s rewarding to see what you’re doing is making a difference in the community.” HE COULD CHOOSE ANY HOSPITAL HE CHOSE MIHS DR.
