Page 16 September 2014 Ingleside principal raises AIMS score after one year By Sarah Stecko The innovative math lab is just one of the tools Ingleside Middle School is using in its mission to improve its AIMS (Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards) rating. Since receiving the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, the school is continuously planning new ways to boost its average and encourage its students to reach new potentials. + and staff made performance on assessments a top priority, according to Principal Chad Caudle. Naturally, that led to creating AIMS Fame, an AIMS preparatory program in which over 200 students attend afterschool classes for six Fridays. Emphasis programs in math and reading are also held. One successful idea Ingleside enacted is the Target Writing Books. These composition books are used in all classes and provoke students to enter vocabulary words and responses to more advanced prompts provided by the teacher. It enables the student to take the time to think critically while applying writing skills. Another period of time dedicated to personal improvement is during the IMPACT Block, or 30-minute segment per week to target standards based on benchmark data. The continuous reinforcement assists in pushing every student closer to mastery, according to Caudle. However, the school is not just focusing on students who are performing at or below average; the children performing at higher levels can challenge themselves with two new enrichment electives named math discovery and literary pursuit. Additionally, there is a new homework enrichment program called Challenge Choices. “[Challenge Choices] promotes rigor by giving students the opportunity to explore content area topics beyond the classroom,” Caudle said. So why is this effort so important to Ingleside? Simply stated by Caudle, they want to be the best at everything they do. Standardized tests are the only way to numerically measure results of a student body in a way that can be compared. These programs that have been enacted within the past year have proven to increase scores. The school’s letter grade has risen to a “B.” The goal is to collectively reach an “A” in 2015. “We hope to expand our opportunities this year for students to receive intervention and enrichment,” Caudle said.
