A quick way to slow down By Jean Hodgson When you ask someone about the most unique trip they have ever taken, they often name an unusual or exotic destination. But my husband and I would immediately identify not the location, but the means of transportation - a narrow boat on a canal! This experience of peaceful and memorable travel was shared with good friends one week in June several summers ago. In 1790 the British Parliament authorized building 36 canals to serve as commercial waterways. Over the years as their use for this purpose diminished, approximately 2,000 miles of these canals have been restored and converted primarily for tourist destinations. However, many people still live on the narrow boats for part of the year, if not year-round. The concept of a “narrow” boat must be taken quite literally as the canals are typically about 20 feet wide and 5 feet deep. So our boat, Bronwyn, was 56 feet long and 7 feet wide, but she had a kitchen, two bedrooms, two baths and also a 100-gallon water tank. This part of our trip officially started at Evesham, a town on the River Avon in England. The company that rented the boat provided instruction books and detailed maps, some orientation and a brief supervised practice in operating the boat - and then we were on our own to be the captain and the crew. These boats are maneuvered by a tiller, and passengers are not only responsible for steering but also for lowering and raising the boat through sets of locks. Yes, this is definitely an active vacation, with manageable tasks that must be taken into consideration when deciding if this adventure is a good match for you. However, we found the experience to be well worth the effort in every way. The speed limit on the canals is 4 mph and you are often traveling even slower than that. One guidebook said, “Canals are the quickest way to slow down.” You can walk along the towpath beside the water or sit onboard and enjoy the meadows, farmland, towns and villages you pass through - while also in the company of the ducks, geese and swans that call these waterways their home. Breakfast was onboard, but our guidebook gave the information we needed to stop at great spots along the way for other meals in villages and pubs and also to plan where to moor at night. A highlight for this British Literature teacher was mooring a couple nights in the Canal Basin Marina in Stratford- upon-Avon. Imagine waking up in the center of Shakespeare’s hometown right by the statue of Hamlet, visiting his burial place in Holy Trinity Church, and then attending a performance of The Taming of the Shrew at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre! After leaving the town of Stratford, we left the Avon River and continued on to soak up the atmosphere on the Stratford Canal. Bronwyn was only rented for a week, so we had to plan carefully for our spot to reverse our route and return to Evesham for the welcome back dinner. Nearly perfect weather (not always the case in the United Kingdom) and compatible travel companions created a treasured memory of peace and beauty! Eileen Klecka, R.N.
