Page 42 August 2014 By Alessandra Dagirmanjian Scottsdale’s Food Truck Caravan celebrated its one-year anniversary last month. For the past year, this event has brought together local food trucks for Street Food Saturdays from 6:30-10:30 p.m. in downtown Scottsdale. The Food Truck Caravan has added a wonderful outdoor dining experience to the corner of Fifth Avenue and Goldwater Boulevard, with a wide range of cuisine, live music, private tent options and much- needed misters. The caravan features over 35 food trucks from the valley, with about eight to 10 trucks present each weekend. Two of these, Udder Delights and The Grilled Cheese Truck, are at the Caravan every weekend, while favorites such as Frank, Sweet Magnolia Smokehouse, LLC and Grilled Addiction come out at least twice every month. The Food Truck Caravan is run by a team of food and planning experts, spearheaded by Scottsdale resident and Event Coordinator Lori Baker, who partnered with local dairy farmer, Casey Stechnij to organize the event. By bringing together small-business owners in downtown Scottsdale, the caravan has become an important catalyst for the local economy, especially since the city has never before allowed trucks on this private property. “It’s pretty historic that we got to set a trend to bring food trucks here to Street food event in Old Town celebrates one year Scottsdale,” said Baker. The caravan focuses on bringing culture and conversation to its community as well as attracting young people downtown. With communal picnic benches and a casual ambiance, guests can explore each truck and discover new cuisines, while also meeting other locals and visitors. “We want to bring street food to the local community and the best way to do it is through events. We’re part of a bigger project to help revitalize downtown Scottsdale and we’ve already proven through statistics and matrixes of local businesses, whose sales increased during our event, that it works,” said Baker. Truck owners agree that the caravan offers an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their distinctive menus, while taking part in the supportive network of local food trucks. “Scottsdale is very lucky to have a unique foodie experience and the rotation of the trucks is always fresh. What is cool about the trucks is that we’re a community and we all know each other, because it’s a very small market as far as the amount of trucks out there. Scottsdale is one of those places where we can come out and have a good time and be food truckers,” said Jason from Saffron JAK Pizzas. As the only reoccurring event of its kind in Scottsdale, the caravan has gained momentum in the food truck community, especially on Instagram, where it has a following of food trucks from all over the world. The caravan has also expanded from Saturday evenings, now bringing their delicious cuisine to private events, such as weddings and parties, as well as fundraisers and corporate events. Still, Saturday evenings in downtown Scottsdale remain a great way to experience the caravan and take part in the regrowth of the community.
