Page 4 August 2 0 1 4 Summer break gone too fast By Amanda Goossen They say the older you get, the quicker time will pass. Boy, is that the truth. How was your summer? Did your family head out of town, sweat the days away or a little bit of both? Are you ready for the kids to head back to school? I have mixed feelings here. We had a great summer. I opted for a more carefree experience for my kids this year. Less planned and more flying by the seat of our pants. The entire school year is regulated by a strict calendar, something I debate constantly. I decided for the summer we would do away with all the “musts” and let the kids be kids. And it worked! As it turns out, the Goossen family is pretty good at being spontaneous. We laughed. We learned. We spent a lot of time together. And with two kids ages six and eight I understand how precious this time has become. The conversations that happened this summer with my daughter astonished me. Without the pressures of looming homework and baseball practice, we spoke about life and music, books and writing. Friendship and love. The little girl who jibber jabbers all day long about this and that had insights and opinions, an intelligence with which I’m glad I got to spend unending time. Not to say that the return of school has me totally devastated. Routines are important. Schedules are helpful and the minds of young kids need math, reading and social studies five days a week, nine and a half months a year. Plus, a mother needs a moment of peace once in awhile and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for lunch with a friend or a date with my husband. If you too are ready to raise a glass and toast the beginning of the school year, Arcadia News has you covered with our first special section based around Dining and Nightlife. Learn about delicious restaurants and enjoy great recipes from both your neighbors and top chefs. The Arcadia News staff and writers even got together to share a few of our favorite things to eat, both at home and around town. In addition to the dining coverage, we’ve dug up news regarding the 2014-15 school year, administrative changes and exciting programs. Cheers to a wonderful August 2014 and as always, thank you for reading the Arcadia News.
