Page 22 August 2014 New principal for Arcadia By Danika Worthington Freshmen won’t be the only newcomers on Arcadia High School’s campus come Aug. 6. The school will also welcome its new principal, Nathan Slater. “Arcadia is, in my opinion, a fantastic school with fantastic students, staff and parental involvement,” Slater said. “It’s rated high in the state. For me to be part of this excellent school leaves me very excited.” Slater will say goodbye to Saguaro High School where he worked as athletic director for three years. Prior to Saguaro, he worked at his alma mater, Coronado High School, for 17 years. “Anytime you leave some place that you love, it’s sad,” Slater said. “But I’m excited about the opportunity.” When he found out he got the job, Slater said he was eager to tackle the challenge of principal. “I gave my kids a big hug,” Slater said. “They’re a huge part of my life.” Slater has had his hands in almost every aspect of a school. Besides 13 years as athletic director, Slater’s curriculum vita also includes curriculum master and assistant principal in various roles, including education services. PTA President Carole Haig, who was a part of the selection committee, said Slater’s experience ranging from teacher to administrator made him a great fit. “He understands very much that the students are the main focus,” Haig said. “It’s all going to be centered around the students.” Haig said Slater’s 27 years of experience with the district as a student and employee made him a prime candidate. After graduating from Coronado, Slater attended the University of Arizona before returning to the district. These days, Slater’s two children are enrolled in the district, Haig said. “As he lives and breathes, he is a product of SUSD,” Haig said. Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Kevin Mooney repeated similar sentiments as Haig regarding Slater’s experience. Mooney worked with Slater as fellow athletic directors for eight years. “I have great respect for the previous principals,” Mooney said. “But it’s always nice to get someone new in to maybe just make some changes and a few improvements. I think it’s going to be a great year.” Mooney said Slater has done a good job at meeting the staff and explaining his expectations. He said Slater will be a good fit with the staff as well as the students. “The Arcadia students are wonderful,” Mooney said. “I think they will be happy to work with someone who is as energetic and engaged as Mr. Slater is.” Haig said only a few parents have been able to meet Slater since his appointment was decided in late June. But she said those who have met the new principal have said they are enthusiastic about him. Although Slater has already been sitting in the principal’s seat over the summer, his primary focus has been getting systems in place. Once the school year starts, he said his main goal will be to listen to all the stakeholders, including the students, parents and teachers, and respond accordingly. The names of the new admin team, from left to right, are: Asst. Principal Cher Fesenmaier (new this year), Principal Nathan Slater (new this year), Asst. Principal John Andrews, Asst. Principal Kevin Mooney. Like us on A rcadiadaily.com Don’t Miss a Day.
