Page 42 July 2014 Create summer memories and have fun with grandkids By Jean Hodgson Do you have grandchildren or other young friends who are out of school in July and available for some fun activities? Luckily we have loads of things to choose from in the Arcadia area that don’t require much physical activity, are mostly out of our Arizona summer heat, and are free or nearly free. Kids of all ages enjoy the excitement of the airport, and the perfect way to get to Terminal Four is by the Sky Train. You connect from the 44th Street/ Washington Light Rail station for your impressive view of the planes and the city below. The Sky Train is free and runs every five minutes. How about a hands-on project with something a child can take home as a reminder of your time together? Maybe you’re not very crafty yourself, but that’s not a problem. Michaels has an in-store kids’ craft summer program called “Passport to Imagination” that meets 10 a.m. until noon every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through August 1. The cost is $2 per workshop and it’s for children 5 to 12. Home Depot (36th Street and Thomas) also provides a free hands-on workshop for that same age group the first Saturday of every month. The July 5 workshop, entitled “Build a Bug House,” is from 9 a.m. until noon. Besides the craft to take home, kids get a certificate of achievement and a workshop apron. A snack to go along with a craft sounds like a winning combination. Wildflower Bread Company serves a complimentary cookie and milk to accompany their activity on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:00. Do you have an aspiring cook who would like a Williams-Sonoma Junior Chef Class? These free events are Saturday mornings starting at 9:30 and look like a skill that the rest of the family could benefit from as the young chef then continues to practice at home. As with all of these workshops, see the details in the stores or visit the websites of these businesses. Attention all animal lovers — the pet stores in our area welcome visitors, and you can watch a huge variety of birds, fish and other small animals and learn about their habits and personalities. You can also observe the pet grooming service and dog training classes by checking the schedules posted in the stores. (WARNING: If you visit the pet adoption area, you will be severely tempted to take a new member of your family home with you!) The Phoenix Public Library always has a summer reading program to motivate readers of all ages. In addition, their free presentations rotate among all the branch locations. Here are some sample titles from their colorful flyer and their website: “Dinosaurs Exposed,” “Reptile Adventure,” “Craig Davis Magic & Juggling Show,” “The Great Arizona Puppet Theater,” and “Worm Drive the Musical.” While you’re there, also check out the Culture Pass, which (Left) Lizzie Lizard is Matthew Hodgson’s new best friend ; (Right) Luke Hodgson and Grandpa Jim build a new riding lawn mower; (Bottom) Aspiring chef Claire Hodgson.
