Page 32 July 2014 Getting to know your bartender... at the juice bar By Amanda Savage For our health issue, we decided to switch-up our monthly Get to Know Your Bartender and feature a familiar face behind one of our new favorite juice bars, Juicd Life at the Biltmore Fashion Park, which is opening a second location in Fashion Square the first of July! Full name: Tanner Pfaff Position: Nutritional Advisor at Juicd Life Where was your first job? My first job was at PacSun Clothing Store in Fashion Square Mall. When did you get your start in the health/juice business? I started juicing about 2 1/2 years ago with my dad, making the juices at home. Where may have people seen you around town (where else have you worked)? Fashion Square, Biltmore Fashion Park, Gainey Village, Chaparral High School, and Scottsdale Community College. How do you spend your free time? I enjoy spending my free time exercising, playing tennis, and helping my dad develop Juicd Life. Guilty pleasure? My biggest indulgence is buying too many clothes. Fun fact people might not know about you? I love to do magic tricks. What is your favorite thing about being a “juicer?” Sharing the benefits of juicing with strangers, and educating them on a healthier lifestyle. Least favorite thing? Working in the middle of the night ensuring our juices are fresh every day. If you could only pick three things that embody a great juicer, what would they be? 1. Consistency 2. Knowledge 3. A passion for health What’s the oddest request you’ve ever gotten from a customer? I had one lady ask me to juice a banana and put it in her drink. It’s a given that as a bartender you get hit on, but do you get hit on as a “juicer,” what is the worst pick-up line you’ve ever heard? Occasionally it happens. I had a girl say “Hey, I lost my phone number can I have yours?” Where are some of your favorite local spots to hang out at (besides the spots you work of course)? Old Town on the weekend. What’s your favorite juice from Juicd Life? Our newest seasonal drink, “Boost.” What’s a refreshing summer juice everyone should try? Hydrate. Ingredients: Watermelon, Lime, Mint. It’s your day off, you have nothing to do, money is not an object -- what would you be doing? Buying my dream car, a Ferrari 458 Italia. Tanner Pfaff helps run the juice bar at Juicd Life. Although I’m not completely vegan, I avoid dairy when I can. With a bit of research and a day of a lot of ice cream sampling, I narrowed down my top picks, from the grocery store to creameries near the neighborhood. Enjoy! At The Store It’s easy to find Italian ice and a lot of different name-brand sorbets that are dairy-free. The tricky part is when you don’t want sorbet, and want something that more closely mimics the creaminess of real ice cream. There are a lot of options out there, and although I have my favorites, it really comes down to individual palate preferences. Dream makes an almond-based, vegan, sea salt caramel gelato of which I’m a big fan. Although, the flavor has a strong, almost coffee taste to it — I don’t have a problem with it, since I love coffee. The consistency is smooth and creamy. I also enjoy coconut milk-based faux cream. I feel like the coconut adds more creaminess, which is the biggest challenge with dairy-free ice cream. So Delicious makes an awesome mint chocolate chip that comes regular or with no sugar added. Last, but definitely not least, I absolutely love Tofutti Cuties dairy-free ice cream sandwiches. Cuties come in a variety of flavors, but you typically only find vanilla, chocolate or mint chocolate chip at the average grocery store. They come freakishly close to tasting like the real thing, but warning, they are addictive. You may need a lock for your freezer. All of these can be found at your local Sprouts! Going Out I was surprised to find not one, but four locations in the area that served dairy-free ice cream. There are definitely more than that in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, but we’ll stick to ones that were only a 15 or so minute drive from the neighborhood. Sweet Republic www.sweetrepublic.com Sweet Republic’s Phoenix location is nestled at the northwest corner of Bethany Home Road and 16th Street in Uptown. They rotate between six vegan sorbet flavors, and are pretty good about bringing in new sorbet flavors with the ice cream flavors to keep it “fair.” Their waffle cones aren’t vegan, but they are “working on it,” according to the cashier. The flavors are fresh, and the consistency is icy but smooth. I recommend their orange mimosa. Veggie Beat Snoh Ice Shavery www.snoh-ice.com Snoh Ice Shavery was definitely out of my comfort zone, and while it wasn’t my favorite on the list, I understand that not everyone’s palates are the same, and some people really seem to love this stuff. “Shaved Snow” is a flavored frozen treat from China that is basically delicately shaved ice that has a light, almost airy quality to it. Not all of their flavors are vegan, but their seasonal coconut flavor is. None of their glazes are vegan, but some of their toppings like lychee fruit and almonds are. If looking for something light and different, it’s worth a try. Melt www.meltphx.com Melt is a sister business to Jobot Coffee, a popular coffee and grub spot in downtown’s artsy Roosevelt Row district. The owners of Jobot teamed up with Udder Delights to create a storefront for the farm’s frozen creations. They offer a variety of rotating sorbets that are dairy free, but contain honey. I recommend their sweet and tart raspberry. Nami www.tsoynami.com Nami’s vegan ice cream options are the closest to the real thing as you’re going to get: It’s creamier and mimics ice cream more closely than a sorbet. While Nami offers many vegan sweets like doughnuts and cakes, their well known for their Tsoynamis, which are pretty much vegan Blizzards. (I covered this spot in our February issue, too.) Tsoynamis are packed with chunks of ingredients. I tried the “Better-Finger” flavor that had chunks of dark chocolate and mock Butterfinger bits that to me, taste better than the real thing. Dairy-free ice cream can be found in stores as well as many ice cream shops throughout Phoenix.
