Camelback Rd., Suite 235 www.citizenoffit.com By Amanda Goossen As their slogan goes, JT’s Bar & Grill is “Arcadia’s Friendly Neighborhood Dive Bar.” Now under new ownership, JT’s, which has been a staple in Arcadia since November 1995, has become even more a part of the neighborhood. In 1995, John Taylor moved to Phoenix after owning a large bar in Kansas City for many years. Hoping to semi-retire and own a small neighborhood place, Taylor purchased the spot that had once been Indian Bend Tavern. JT’s would go on to become the neighborhood bar. It was the place to grab a quick beer and a plate of wings. For many it was the spot to relax after a hard day’s work. This was the case for new owners and longtime best friends, Matt Fredrick and Sergio Ramos. Matt and Sergio grew up across the street from each other in Arcadia. In 1993 and 1996, they graduated from Arcadia High School and went on to attend ASU. During college, the best friends and roommates tended the bar at The Tee Pee restaurant, stopping many nights at JT’s before heading home. During college, the lifelong friends went from being roommates to neighbors, when Sergio bought the house across the street from the one Matt already owned and they had lived in together. The two men lived across the street from each other, in Arcadia, until 2007. Soon after, although no longer neighbors, Sergio and Matt would become business partners with the man they’d seen a few nights a week, for years. “JT approached us and said he wanted us to take over the bar someday,” said Fredrick. “In 2007 we became silent partners.” Although both men have day jobs outside the food and beverage business, with Matt in commercial real estate and Sergio in medical distribution, they are dedicated to keeping this neighborhood bar a staple in the community. In March 2014, Matt and Sergio took over full ownership and business operations of JT’s Bar & Grill. And although JT suffered a stroke a few years ago and is no longer involved in the business, that doesn’t mean he isn’t around. “JT is still a fixture,” said Fredrick. “He comes down and sits out front almost everyday.” The friends hired close friend Chuck Sanders to run the day-to-day operations. A friend since their days at Arcadia High, it only made sense to hire someone who knows the business just as well as he knows the owners. Renovations of the bathrooms will take place this summer. Otherwise, the overall look and feel of JT’s will stay the same. “It’s just so great to be a part of a place that regulars truly care about,” said Ramos. And now, these best friends from Arcadia own a piece of its history. “We went to Arcadia High, Matt’s wife went there and my wife was a teacher there for many years,” said Ramos. “We love this neighborhood.” JT’s Bar a& Grill is located at 4829 E.
