It’s a common question this time of year as our friends and neighbors hunt for something to take to the beach, the pool or even the couch during the warm Phoenix nights. Some form large stacks and give themselves a challenge (that’s me and I can’t wait to dive in) but for others quality trumps quantity, hence the desperate survey of everyone they know. For me, my favorite way to find new books is to scan the shelves. I tend to really judge a book by its cover, scanning the quotes from fellow writers, reading the authors bio and investigating the cover image until all meaning is lost. I even have to feel it between my fingers, the weight, the shape, and the texture of the pages. It’s a process I’ve mastered over the years, something I started when I was about 11 years old, feverishly searching the library shelves determined to discover the greatest book of all time. And if I come up empty handed at the bookstore (or these days, at Target or Costco) the next best way to find a good book is to ask the fabulous women of the Arcadia News Book Club. This group of heavy hitters has you covered in whatever genre, author or page count you desire. And they are passionate, so much fun to talk with and truly some of the best people I’ve ever known. Head on over and join the Arcadia News Book Club at the Saguaro Library this summer. The next meeting will be held on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and a raffle will be held to benefit the Arcadia News Assisting Neighbors program. Raffle tickets are $5 each and the prizes should not be missed. Marcus Byrn is one of the deadliest and most violent witches in modern day England. The surprising thing is he had a son with a white witch. Their son, Nathan Byrn, is a half black and half white witch and everyone calls him Half Code. Locked in a cage by his enemies, the only way Nathan can stay alive is to escape and find his father. Marcus has three gifts to give Nathan so he will receive his magical powers and the suspense that follows makes this YA novel impossible to put down. SLEEP NO MORE By Aprilynn Pike In her most recent novel Sleep No More , author Aprilynn Pike presents Charlotte, an Oracle who can see the future. This gift, however, comes with consequences. When she was young, Charlotte saved her aunt by looking into the future, but it ended up hurting her parents. Her dad died as a result and her mom was handicapped. Ever since, Charlotte has tried to avoid dreaming and seeing the future. When a vision hits her that she can’t push away, Charlotte is faced with a dilemma. Can she save her friends or will she actually make things worse by getting involved? THE LUCK UGLIES By Paul Durham In The Luck Uglies by Paul Durham, readers are presented with a strange town of Village Drowning, where mystical rumors are going around about monsters that were thought to be extinct. A secret group now exiled for disobeying the King, were once the only thing protecting the Village from monsters. Page 59 June 2 0 1 4 Venues throughout city make music readily available By Craig Goossen Getting out and enjoying a show is easy as 1-2-3 and often times can be more exciting than many sources of entertainment. We’re lucky to live in a city that pumps nightly with great acts and a variety of venues of the highest quality. This month our music mix showcases the spice of this city and the venues that stage these acts. If you’ve never been to the Crescent Ballroom downtown or only been to US Airways Center for a Suns game, this is the perfect month to catch a lift downtown to enjoy both venues. The Yucca Tap Room in Tempe has been putting on live shows for over forty years and most of the time, if not always, entrance is free. Those of us who reside in Arcadia, if you haven’t been to The Western, don’t wait any longer, as this neighborhood bar is one of the tops in the city and there’s live music five nights a week. Lastly, our month caps off with a celebration at the casino and as far as Arizona casinos go, we have one of the finest right down the road in Scottsdale. ALLAH-LAS: HAD IT ALL (2013) Hailing from Los Angeles and rising from their record store day jobs, Allah-Las debut release was a dusty garage classic that wore my turntable out in 2012. Their live show at Crescent is an excellent hump- day outing as we begin the month. This track is courtesy of their last release, a vinyl 7-inch. Allah-Las will perform on Wednesday, June 4 at Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. 2nd Ave. in downtown Phoenix. Tickets are $12 and the show is 16 years of age and older. JAMES TAYLOR: SOMETHING IN THE WAY SHE MOVES (1968) Taylor’s notorious past wasn’t enough to dissuade the Beatles from signing the first American act to their Apple label and in retrospect it’s amazing Taylor survived his lifestyle to record for anyone, much less the Fab Four. James Taylor will come to Phoenix fresh off a two-night stint at the storied Hollywood Bowl in time to get us refreshed for our long hot summer. James Taylor performs on Tuesday, June 10 at US Airways Center, 201 E. Jefferson St. in downtown Phoenix. Tickets start at $59.50 and the show is all ages. PAUL COLLINS: THE LETTER (2010) The Nerves were a short-lived, but classic power pop trio featuring Pete Case, Jack Lee and Paul Collins. Their minor hit, Hanging on the Telephone turned into a big hit for the band Blondie. Paul Collins, one third of the influential Nerves will play for free at this Tempe staple. Be there, it’s a no brainer. Paul Collins performs on Saturday, June 14 at Yucca Tap Room, 29 W. Southern Ave. in Tempe. The show is free and 21 and over. JESSICA LEA MAYFIELD: ALL NIGHT LONG (1988) I know very little of Mayfield, other than this selected track which I’ve been playing over and over. She’s young, from Ohio and I’m going to The Western on a Sunday to find out more about her. Jessica Lea Mayfield performs on Sunday, June 22 at The Western, 6830 E. 5th Ave. in Scottsdale. Tickets are $14 and the show is 21 and over. 311: SAND DOLLARS (2014) 311 have just released their 11th studio release, Stereolithic, and have built an intense and loyal following through their impressive 25+ year career. If you’ve been lucky enough to see 311 live you know this will be an uplifting event to close the door on June and enter July. 311 performs on Sunday, June 29 at Talking Stick Resort, 9800 East Indian Bend Rd. in Scottsdale.
