Bashas’ sells 50-year-old neighborhood shopping center By Amanda Goossen Arcadia commercial real estate has begun a revolution over the past year. Whether completely knocking down existing buildings or revamping current structures, the neighborhood is making way for new buildings, businesses and people. The word gets around pretty fast in Arcadia, but the real buzz begins when the construction fences go up. In mid-May, news hit that the 50 year-old Food City shopping center on 32nd St. and Indian School had been purchased for $16.75 million by DeRito Opportunity Investors LLC, affiliated with DeRito Partners. “I’m thrilled that something is going to be done with that shopping center. There was a time when it was a busy and well-maintained center. I bowled at Squaw Peak for many years and miss having a bowling alley close by,” said Joni Symonds, longtime Arcadia resident. Built in 1959, the shopping center was originally home to a Bashas’ Grocery Store. The Basha family owned the 147,000 square foot center and in 2005 converted the supermarket to Food City. Ace Hardware is now the most prominent business in the center and will remain even after the renovations. Food City will close within the month, transferring current employees to other Basha’s locations. The shopping center will be completely renovated and the marketing for the space is underway. “We are open to any and all suggestion for the space,” said Marty DeRito, DeRito Partners CEO. DeRito and his partners Iver Bowden and Doug Himmelberger will be joining with the Van Tuyl Group to redevelop the property. The shopping center will be named Arcadia Fiesta. “We are excited about the redevelopment of Indian School Rd. as a whole,” said DeRito. “We feel that when we finish, the renovations of this road will continue all the way to the 51 freeway.” Multiple groups were looking to purchase the shopping center when it recently went up for sale and DeRito said he feels honored that the Basha family decided to go with him and his partners. It is currently up in the air whether a new bowling alley will replace the once bustling AMF Bowling Alley or whether the space will be redeveloped for a new purpose. Arcadia resident Catherine Hayes is one of the architects working on the new design for the center. An additional 18,000 square feet are planned for new restaurants, businesses and parking, practically ensuring a change to the landscape of the area. “My partners and I are just really happy to be a part of this redevelopment,” said DeRito. The southwest corner of 32nd Street and Indian School Road has new owners, new plans.
