THE HERMOSA INN 5532 North Palo Cristi Road 602-955-8614 www.hermosainn.com In the 1930s, Alonzo “Lon” Megargee set his sights on a piece of land in present day Paradise Valley. The land was extremely isolated and as he saw it, the perfect location for his one-room art studio. Lon earned a living as a cowboy, broncobuster, stud poker dealer, commercial artist and homebuilder. Although he was reportedly a ladies man, chasing numerous dreams, the most important thing was his adobe studio. Using sandy desert soil, Lon hand made each adobe brick on site and slowly began the building process. With no formal plans, Lon learned the skills he needed along the way, eventually completing the home he came to call Casa Hermosa (beautiful house). With little cash rolling in from his artwork, Lon began making extra money running Casa Hermosa as a ranch house. The casa became a quick hit, possibly due to the rumors of gambling as well as underground tunnels, used to disguise any illegal activity. Decades later, after changing hands multiple times and even surviving a fire, which destroyed the main house on the property, the Hermosa Inn remains one of the areas most extraordinary hotels. A boutique experience, the hotel pays tribute to its original owner and builder with Lon’s at the Hermosa restaurant and a $2 million art exhibit from Figarelli Fine Art, which can be experienced through the Hermosa Inn Art Walks Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 a.m. A newly added art program with area artist Carrie Curran allows for even the most inexperienced guests to feel like an artist for the day with individual and group classes. Ask about the “Artist for a Day” summer hotel package, which brings together not only a luxurious hotel stay but the art experience as well. HOTEL PALOMAR 2 East Jefferson Street 602-253-6633 www.hotelpalomar-phoenix.com Downtown Phoenix has grown to be one of the most happening parts of the city, evolving to a dining and artistic hotspot. This summer there is no better place to get away with a group of friends to enjoy everything downtown has to offer, while also experiencing some of the Kimpton hotel’s excellent service and comfortable, plush rooms. Set in the fantastic Phoenix CityScape, Hotel Palomar is a stylish stop in the middle of a bustling area. The rooftop pool provides a great place to party or even take a morning yoga class, while Blue Hound Kitchen will mix up their signature cocktails. HOTEL VALLEY HO 6850 East Main Street 480-248-2000 www.hotelvalleyho.com In the mid-1950s, Robert and Evelyn Foehl came up with an inspired hotel concept. Robert had worked at the Arizona Biltmore and had managed the Jokake Inn. He was confident in his knowledge and worked hard to establish investors and an architect, to bring his dream to fruition. Designed by Edward L. Varney, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, the building was created with the desire to be “forward looking and futuristic.” In March 1956 a contest was held to name the hotel. “Valley” was applied because of its location, near Paradise Valley and “Ho” was used because of its Aboriginal translation “You Are Welcome Here.” The Valley Ho opened its doors in 1956 and became a quick hit amongst locals, tourists and celebrities. In 1973 Robert Foehl passed away and Evelyn sold the Valley Ho to Ramada Hotels. The new ownership brought with it a total redesign, as Ramada tried to cover up the 1950 design that they saw as outdated. Slowly, the Valley Ho lost its popularity. Westroc Hotels bought the Valley Ho in 2002 and worked to bring back the brilliance that had once pulsated from the walls. A seven-story tower was added in the spirit of Varney’s original design and the “retro-chic” look was dramatically brought to the forefront.
