ARIZONA BILTMORE 2400 East Missouri Avenue 602-955-6600 www.arizonabiltmore.com Warren McArthur Jr. and his brother Charles McArthur, along with John McEntree Bowman, the entrepreneur behind the Biltmore chain of hotels, opened the Arizona Biltmore in 1929. The McArthurs lost control of the Biltmore during the depression and chewing gum mogul William Wrigley Jr. bought out their interest. Under his ownership, the Catalina Pool and the Cowboy Bunkhouse areas opened. The hotel became a hot spot for celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe. He also built a home for his wife on the hill overlooking the hotel. The mansion was finished in 1931 and was meant as a 50th wedding anniversary gift for Ada. William Wrigley Jr. passed away only one year after building the home. He left the home and hotel to his son, Philip. The Wrigley family owned the Arizona Biltmore for over 44 years. In 1973 the Wrigleys sold to Talley Industries and the hotel was closed for renovations. During the construction a welding torch ignited the gold leaf ceiling in the lobby, leading to a 6-alarm fire. Architects and construction workers worked around the clock to not only mend the fire and water damage, but to continue their original efforts. In a record 82 days the hotel was back in business, with finer detail and greater beauty than ever before. Now a Waldorf Astoria Resort, the Arizona Biltmore still lives up to its reputation as The Jewel of the Desert since 1929. A sprawling property with an old fashioned feel, the hotel has worked tirelessly over the years to renovate and keep things up to modern day standards.
