Page 14 June 2 0 14 Get to know the writers By Amanda Goossen In the past year, Arcadia News has worked to build a great team of writers who bring you the stories and columns each month. This month we begin a fun new segment to help you, our readers, get to know the people bringing you great articles to read in every edition. What are you looking forward to about Summer 2014? Kaley Kalil “This summer, I’m most looking forward to spending a week at Mission Beach with my family – my first time back since high school!” Michelle Donati-Grayman “This summer is full of excitement. At the end of June, my spouse will return from a deployment with the Air National Guard. In early July, I’ll have a new niece. And, by the end of the summer, I’ll become a mother myself to twin boys!” Amanda Savage “This summer I’m looking forward to traveling! I’m road-tripping across the U.S. for Bonnaroo, then heading up to Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell and Zion for 4th of July!” Christina Surrano “Family vacation at my brother’s house in San Carlos, boating, fishing and free diving in the Sea of Cortez, just like we did as kids.” Kathleen Shipman “I would say going on vacation to San Diego, and also not having to follow as many school schedules.” Jean Hodgson “We are BIG fans of Downton Abbey and are visiting Highclere Castle (where it is filmed) as part of a trip to England and Scotland.” NMLS# 179446 / BK0902429 / NOVA NMLS 3087 In any successful real estate transaction communication is key. The communication from Tom Ross and his team is second to none. Their level of professionalism recently turned what could have been a complicated transaction into a smooth and enjoyable experience for all parties. I would recommend them to anyone looking for true professionalism in their lending relationship. ~ Larry Summerson / Arcadia Agent - Home Smart Elite Group Serving Arizona for over 34 years! Page 15 June 2 0 14 Behind the Business By Amanda Goossen The words Arcadia and family go hand in hand. Little league games, farmers’ markets bustling with strollers, and charity family fun runs are just a few things this community does together on a regular basis, strengthening both our neighborhood and the ties that bind us together. This month as we prepare to celebrate Fathers, Arcadia News is thrilled to highlight four dads who work hard to make a difference not only in their own lives, but in the community where their children will and have grown up. Robert Joffe Realtor Dad to Adam and Jonah Arcadia has been home to the Joffe family since 1991. Robert, his wife Amy and their two sons Adam (23) and Jonah (18) have not only lived here, they’ve made their life here. With the majority of their real estate business being in Arcadia, moving to the neighborhood only made sense. “Amy is from Ohio and I’m from Michigan,” said Robert. “It just feels mid- western. This space resonates with us.” The Joffe boys grew up in Arcadia Little League, with their dad as their coach and even sometimes as umpire. Robert ran the Arcadia High School Titans Football Booster Club for the past three years and now his oldest son is on the coaching staff. With the Joffe men, sports are the force that connects them. Basketball, football and baseball were a large part of Adam and Jonah’s childhood, with dad either coaching or helping out. And Robert still plays hockey regularly. Hiking in Flagstaff is another favorite activity. Giving back to the community, however is also a major part of their lives. “We’ve worked with Phoenix Children’s Hospital for many years,” said Robert. “And Fresh Start Women’s Foundation has been a big part of our life for over 15 years.” The Jewell McFarland Lewis Fresh Start Women’s Resource Center offers counseling, mentoring, education, career services, legal services, child watch, an E-Learning center and personal development services that include clothing sessions, makeovers and empowerment classes. Whether a woman is going through a divorce, just became unemployed or is just looking for something new in her life, Fresh Start is dedicated to supporting women who want to thrive. “We had a dear friend whose son needed help,” said Robert, “so PCH was a no brainer for us. The hospital is really incredible.” “And Fresh Start just does really great things for women. We’ve always felt it was important to be involved.” Doug Beischel Dentist Dad to Lyndon, Lara, Liv and Lars Doug Beischel was born and raised in Calgary, Canada and moved to Phoenix in 1993 after graduating from the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. His dental practice on the corner of Scottsdale and Thomas Roads and his home, which he purchased in 1996, make Arcadia home. “The best thing about Arcadia is the people. Arcadia residents have a real sense of community and pride in their neighborhood,” said Doug. The Beischel family might have their feet planted in Arcadia, but they’re fully aware of the world that surrounds them. Lyndon (13) and Lara (11) attend Christ Lutheran School. Both are active in sports, playing Arcadia Scottsdale Unified Soccer and little league. Lyndon is active in his Boy Scout troop and is going to China this summer as he was accepted to a cultural immersion program in Xianyang in July. Liv (9) and Lars (8) attend the International School of Arizona. They both played recreational soccer and are both in Arcadia Little League. The kids are fluent in both Spanish and French and know a surprising amount of Mandarin. And giving back is a major part of this family’s life. They have learned about giving back to the community through their church, Prince of Peace, their schools and their extracurricular activities. The Prince of Peace youth group travels to San Diego in the summer to help in shelters and soup kitchens. This summer they’re travelling to New Orleans and New York to help with hurricane clean ups. Lyndon’s Boy Scout Troop 6 does a number of local civic improvement projects, many in Arcadia. And the Beischels have been to Mexico several times with Christ Lutheran Church helping the impoverished in Rocky Point. Doug’s own volunteer work is done through his profession. He has volunteered at the John C. Lincoln Children’s Dental clinic for over 16 years with about 40-50 other local dentists. He was also one of the dental leads with the Central Arizona Dental Society Mission of Mercy project held at Veterans Memorial Coliseum the last two Decembers. With the last Arizona MOM project and 1500 volunteers, CADS was able to help over a thousand low-income people receive over a million dollars in donated services. “With our children, I just want them to realize that they are extremely lucky to live in such a beautiful and safe community, and not to take it for granted,” said Doug. “We have tried to foster the idea that time is a precious commodity for everyone, and that helping others in giving of their time is important.” The Moran Group Welcomes Kirk Lipson!
