Page 10 June 2 014 Arcadia News awards 10th Annual Scholarship to AHS journalism students By Kathleen Shipman Every year, Arcadia News is proud to offer a $1000 scholarship to deserving seniors at Arcadia High School (AHS) and this year marked the 10th year that the scholarship was granted. Journalism students Monica Goodman and Carlos Moreno were selected to be the recipients of the award, each receiving $500 to help further their education. It was because of their dedication and incredible work ethic in the field of journalism that they were chosen for this honor. “Monica Goodman and Carlos Moreno represent the best of the next generation of journalists. Both have a sense of how their peers think and what is important to them, and find tech worthy approaches to keeping the interest in news alive,” said Journalism Educator, Bryce McKinney- Wain. “The boost in the right direction offered by Arcadia News can make the difference in their levels of success.” Goodman and Moreno played very important roles at Arcadia during their high school careers. Goodman was greatly involved in the Contemporary Music and Sound Program, where she worked in the background on production. In addition, as a junior Goodman was the Co-Editor of the yearbook, earning the title of Yearbook Editor her senior year. Although there was a lot of work in creating the school’s book of memories, she thoroughly enjoyed her experience in doing so. “It did get stressful at times, but it’s something that I’m really happy I did through high school,” said Goodman. “I spent a lot of time on the yearbook and I am very proud of it.” Moreno was the Business Manager of the Journalism Program, in charge of gathering advertisements for their school’s newspaper. Moreno would travel to local businesses in the area to raise money for the production of the paper. Along with his professional skills, he also has a passion for writing. “I like getting the word out there,” said Moreno. “I’m always a man who likes to express what he’s thinking and I think journalism is a pretty exciting way to spread it.” Both students have planned individual paths in pursuit of higher education. In August, Goodman will be attending the music school CRAS (Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences) in Tempe, with plans to transfer in March to their campus in Los Angeles. Moreno was recently accepted into Arizona State University, where he hopes to study this fall. Goodman and Moreno are both very appreciative of their scholarships, which will help go towards the high costs of these establishments. AHS has also expressed their gratitude for the annual award. “Finding scholarships is a challenging and time consuming process,” said Monica Merritt-Benson, College and Career Coordinator at Arcadia. “Arcadia High School is very grateful for the support Arcadia News has provided our students over the years.” For Arcadia News Publisher Greg Bruns, he enjoys nothing more than being able to lend a hand to Arcadia students as they begin a new chapter in their lives. “It is an honor to be able to help some of our graduating seniors as they embark on an expensive college career,” said Bruns. “From all of us at Arcadia News , we wish the best to the departing class of 2014!” Journalism students Monica Goodman and Carlos Moreno are the recipients of this year’s Arcadia News college scholarship award, each receiving $500 to go towards their education.
