The group featured three students from the girls soccer team, seniors Marissa Dominick and Kate Staudenmaier, along with junior Megan Hawkins. The girls team played well all year long before bowing out in the first round of the playoffs. “It was disappointing,” Dominick said. We played Saguaro in Tucson and they just had a center forward that we couldn’t keep up with.” The two seniors are already lining up their plans for the fall. Dominick will continue to play soccer in college, although she is still deciding where that will be. Staudenmaier, who was also named to The Arizona Republic’s All-Arizona Girls Soccer Team, will be attending the University of Denver. Hawkins plans to head to Grand Canyon University, but not before coming back next year for her senior season. The boys soccer team had a player honored at the dinner as well. Lorenzo Belhassen finished his senior season this year and earlier this spring signed his letter of intent to continue playing the sport at Chapman University. Completing the Arcadia High six were a pair of junior basketball players. Andrea Goulette starred for the girls team this season, averaging 11.4 points per game along with 2 assists per contest. Boys star Connor Nichols was also honored at the dinner. The boys team made the playoffs and won their first round matchup, before heading to Lake Havasu for the second round. “I’ve never seen that many people at a game before,” said Nichols. “It seemed like the whole town was there.” The team won that game, before finally losing in overtime of their 3rd round matchup. All six athletes have bright futures ahead of them, on and off the sports field. “I enjoyed the awards ceremony,” said Nichols. “It gave me a chance to measure myself against the best in the city.” By Tina Tombs “When it’s windy, swing easy.” I hope you are all enjoying this great weather we’re having this spring here in Phoenix. If you are a visitor or permanent resident of Arizona, we want to keep this weather a secret! Have you noticed that it’s been a bit breezy, sometimes even windy and gusty while you are out on the links? One shot that I am finding we need right now on the course is the knock down shot! Well, this is the shot you need to use when playing into the wind or when there’s a crosswind. When it’s windy, swing easy to keep the ball low. Slow swing speeds will keep the ball low under the wind. Set up and Execution: • Take plenty of clubs, maybe 1-2 extra clubs • Grip down for more control • Ball position is more centered or slightly back of center • Shaft lean is forward of the ball, where the butt end of the grip is pointing (toward the forward hip) • Weight is left and length of your swing is 3/4 with a low finish. Enjoy playing with this new shot! Tina Tombs is the Director of Instruction at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club and an LPGA Tour Professional. You can contact her at Tina@tinatombsgolf.com.
