Page 4 May 2 0 1 4 Let’s look at a bit of history! By Amanda Goossen In 1908, the modern holiday of Mother’s Day was born when Anna Jarvis held a memorial to honor her mother and her charity work. In 1912, inspired to continue honoring her mother, Ms. Jarvis, who was apparently a very smart woman, trademarked the phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day.” She also created the Mother’s Day International Association. Anna then worked to bring “Mother’s Day” to life for the entire country. She began to lobby business men and politicians, eventually making her way to President Taft. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill to establish the first Mother’s Day, officially making it a U.S. holiday. Wow, what have you done for your mom lately! AND file this under crazy but true: In 1948, after seeing the way her sentimental holiday had been commercially corrupted, Jarvis admitted that she regretted ever starting the tradition. She was even arrested for disturbing the peace at an event when she became enraged at the white carnations (her mother’s favorite flower) being sold for profit. So this year, on the second Sunday in May , when you forget to buy a card, just blame it on Anna Jarvis. She wouldn’t have approved anyway! In all seriousness, Arcadia News fell upon quite possibly the most adorable way for an 8-year-old boy to show his mom he cares, when he sent us a 6-page comic book about Mega Mom! In his precious words and illustrations, Nate Fox brought to life all the life altering ways his mom comes to his rescue each and every day. Way to go Nate! We also discovered an outstanding group of moms at St. Theresa Catholic School who have established a third-grade book club for their girls, to show female camaraderie and the importance of supporting, not bullying your fellow females. And then there’s Katie Cosmas, a mom who has worked tirelessly with her husband Mark to create the Arcadia Family Fun Run in honor of their daughter, Taylor Paige. Her commitment and hard work is a beautiful example to our community. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom spending days with the kiddos, or a working mom trying to find balance in it all, Happy Mother’s Day to you! It’s a tough job, but one, I know, I wouldn’t trade for anything else in the world. Happy Mother’s Day Arcadia!
