Page 37 March 2014 Get to know a bartender, one month at a time By Amanda Savage Full name: Justin Jensen Position: Bar Manager / neighborhood counselor adult babysitter / fun facilitator Years at O.H.S.O.: 2.5 years When I was 14 I lived in Albuquerque. I wanted to start making my own money, so with the permission of my parents, I got a work permit, and got a job at Sandia Peak Ski Area: washing dishes, shoveling snow, making sandwiches, taking out the garbage and pretty much just any odd jobs around the resort. When did you get your start I have worked in bars and restaurants in Minnesota, New Mexico and Arizona, and have been working in the restaurant industry for 12 years in just about every position. 18. I was a server at a Ruby Tuesdays at the time and during a Friday night rush, the bartender cut his hand open pretty bad and the manager had to take him to the hospital, so I stepped in to take care of the bar and get drinks out for the restaurant. I guess I didn’t do a terrible job because I came in the next day and I was the new bartender. Since then I’ve worked at Red Lobster, Macaroni Grill, T.G.I. Fridays, P.F. Changs and several others. Bartending as a trade has given me the opportunity to move around the country and travel, which are two of my favorite things. How do you spend your I spend free time just loving life. I love Gina and our dogs Stella and Ollie. We enjoy hiking and being outdoors, we love to cook and we really love to travel. Lifetime movie network. It is easy to zone out at 3 a.m. after a long night. Fun fact people might not What is your favorite thing ! great people, those interactions are what make the job so rewarding and unpredictable. What about your Getting off work at 3:00 a.m. If you could only pick three things that embody a great bartender, what would they be? In my opinion you have to be charismatic, have a good grasp on your time management and priorities and be able to be resilient and shake things off quickly to maintain a great attitude at all times. You have all kinds of personalities around you between your bar guests and co-workers. A lot of what happens depends on the bar, it’s important to maintain a good attitude at all times because negativity is extremely contagious and nobody likes a wet blanket behind the bar. What’s the oddest request you’ve ever gotten from a People ask me to be the judge of all kinds of questionable things. What happens at O.H.S.O., stays at O.H.S.O. It’s a given that as a bartender you get hit on, or see others get hit on, what is the worst I’ve heard them all. And they never go over well. Here’s some advice, you can call it a 21st century Arcadian pick up line: Get a puppy, come in to O.H.S.O. And voilà! What’s your go-to drink Craft beer!!!!! Usually an IPA of some # $ time and a place for every beverage. Where are some of your favorite local spots to hang out at (besides O.H.S.O. ! The Little Woody, The Parlor, Postino and Cornish Pasty. What’s your favorite cocktail "#$#%#"# The Mule!! Our Moscow mule is a little different, it is made with fresh ginger juice which gives it a little extra kick. If you like Moscow mules and ginger O.H.S.O.’s mule will knock your socks off. Our guest brew program is awesome as well. We always have something delicious and new on tap that is usually co-brewed by someone from the neighborhood. Can’t get more local than that! What’s a great Saint Patrick’s Day drink I don’t want to sound like a traditionalist here but Irish car bombs are always my personal favorite. This is the recipe I recommend: ½ oz. Jameson Irish whiskey ½ oz. baileys Irish cream 8 oz. nitro stout (Guinness is the original but I prefer Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout or Four Peaks Oatmeal Stout.) It’s your day off, you have nothing to do, Golf, Golf or Golf, but not necessarily in that order. Justin Jensen hands one of his many loyal customers a beer on the patio at O.H.S.O.
