Page 33 March 2014 Beer taps at Cornish Pasty promise a festive St. Patrick’s Day. By Amanda Savage Animal ingredients can pop-up in the strangest places, alcohol being one of them. With Saint Patrick’s Day around drop “the beer you like is probably not vegetarian” bomb on you. Unfortunately, Saint Patrick’s Day favorites like darker ales, stouts and porters are going to be the main contenders for animal byproducts. A lot of distilleries and breweries use animal stages of brewing. Things like isinglass Many Saint Patty’s Day favorites like Guinness, Harp and Murphy’s Irish Stout are not vegan. Vegans do have luck in the whiskey and bourbon departments. A lot of popular choices like Johnnie Walker, Jim ! Jameson, Jack Daniels and Maker’s Mark are all vegan friendly–yay! While there are a lot of beers out there, popular vegan options include select beers by Heineken, Magic Hat, Abita, Anheuser-Busch, Odell, Lost Coast, Lagunitas, Goose Island, New Belgium, North Coast, Sierra Nevada, Rogue and Stone. # recommend visiting barnivore.com, it’s a great resource for vegan beers, wines and liquors. There are also helpful apps like “Vegan Alcohol Guide” for iOS, “Vegan Drinks” for Windows and “Vegan” and “Vegan Free” for Android. When you think of a traditional Irish Pub, vegan options are probably one of the last things you would assume they consider, and while many local bars will celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, I decided to feature two, real, local pubs and eateries, and what their options are for veggies for the holiday. !" For food and drink, go to one of the nearby Cornish Pasty locations in Tempe or Old Town Scottsdale. They are packed on Saint Patrick’s Day, and while they don’t offer anything out of the ordinary for the holiday, they offer many vegan and vegetarian food and drink options. Cornish’s menu offers a whole section of vegan and vegetarian pasties, and even offers imitation meat. The restaurant also has a long, revolving beer list. # $ %& ' ( # Go to Rosie’s for the party. While their regular menu offers some vegan and vegetarian options, on Saint Patrick’s Day they offer a buffet-style menu only, containing mostly meat-based options. Rosie’s offers Stella and Bud Light on Saint Patrick’s Day, which are both vegan. The party at Rosie McCaffrey’s is really where it’s at, offering live music and a slew of Saint Patrick’s Day offerings. Cornish Pasty is a pub-like place to hang out.
