Page 26 March 2014 By Danika Worthington Walking into Marty J. White’s house is like walking into a gallery. Masks, statues and the like cover every visible surface– something unsurprising of an artist who hosts classes out of her backyard. “Being an artist myself, seeing all the creative stuff she had done,” said Scottsdale snowbird and student Jolene Weisblat, “I just went around her whole house and looked at everything.” Marty is a 64-year-old artist with white hair pulled back into a slick bun and colorful yet eloquent clothing. She worked in education and furniture retail for the majority of her life, but after she retired, she turned her attention to art. She has been holding classes in her       people, such as Weisblat, how to make a variety of pieces including masks, vessels and spirits, which are like statues. Some of the works require students to come back one or two times to complete. Much of her artwork centers around gourds, a hollowed out plant that comes from the pumpkin family. She said gourds were used to hold liquids in the Roman times and are still used today by migrant workers in South America, something some of her students reminisce about. Classes have 6-8 people who sit at tables surrounded by supplies and tools. Marty teaches them how to design, cut, burn and paint the gourds. Students choose what they want to make, sometimes walking through Marty’s house for inspiration. To create, students use the supplies in Marty’s backyard, including four different types of drills and two power sanders. The total cost of her equipment comes to about $10,000, she said. Weisblat, who has a degree in art, took one of Marty’s classes after she saw her work at an art festival in Carefree. She said she had fun and learned a lot. Arcadian’s passion for art creates shared experience “I’ve painted, I’ve sculpted, I’ve done a lot of things but when I saw her work I thought, I’ve got to do that,” Weisblat said. If people are interested, Marty will share a glass of wine with them and give a critique of their work. She also holds open studios for more experienced students to come back and get advice on their pieces. There are no age restrictions to participate. “I’ve had a 6th grader who used a dremel and she did a better job than her older brother,” Marty said. The class is especially open to retired people 60 and older, Marty said. It’s important to Marty for people to stay active after they retire and learn new things. “Just because you’re retired doesn’t mean you should sit eating a bag of Doritos all day,” Marty said. Marty is a living example of this as she didn’t start teaching classes at her home until she retired. She also teaches classes to disabled kids, stroke victims and veterans. “I was going to retire but that never happens when you’re type A,” Marty said. Marty was interested in art since she was a child. At age 7, she drew a sketch of her grandfather. A paint-by-numbers man himself, her grandfather recognized her talent and “coaxed” her into art. When she graduated high school, he paid for her to go to Europe to look at the masters. Her parents disapproved of a career in art, so Marty focused on education. Although she always did art, after she retired, she threw herself into it with new vigor. Interested in masks, she began to take classes across the U.S. She participates in shows across the nation in places such as California, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Marty packs a trailer, attached it to her car and drives thousands of miles to show. A friend of Marty’s, Amy Tuso, said Marty was brave and independent to travel far distances on her own. She also said art is a large part of who Marty is.         that comfort zone where she’s able to just let go and let the creative process happen,” Tuso said. Marty described a similar idea and said she can lose herself into art. On one New Year’s Eve, for example, she came home and immediately started creating. She did not stop until 10:30 a.m. the next day. “She isn’t in it just as a venue to make money,” Tuso said. “She’s in it because it’s part of her soul. She needs to create.
