Page 23 March 2014 A little library for one and all By Heather Kinkel “Take a book, return a book” is the mantra behind the Little Free Library concept and organization. The revolving free library idea was a concept happily brought to neighborhoods and communities everywhere by Todd Bol. It all began back in 2009 in Hudson, Wisconsin. Todd Bol built a model of a one-room books and put it on a post in his front yard. He added a sign that read “FREE BOOKS” and born. Todd’s community loved the concept so much that he built a few more for his neighbors and friends. By August of 2012, they reached 2,510 Little Free Libraries nationwide, and by January of 2014, the total number of registered Little Free Libraries is between 10,000 and 12,000. Here in Arcadia, we have at least two Little Free Libraries that are loved and used by the community. Residents are encouraged to bring a book (or two, or three!) and take a book. The books can children’s books. The more diverse the additions to the Library ensure that no two visits to the Little Free Library will ever be the same. There are a few other Little Free Libraries in our surrounding communities, and the organization is always looking to add more! Any homeowner or business is welcome to build their own free-standing Little Free Library and place it on their property for the public to enjoy. Little Free Libraries have proven their long-standing value in Arcadia by being unique. Each Library has a special, personal touch – real people in real communities are sharing their favorite books with their neighbors. Interested in having a Little Free Library in your front yard? Visit ittlefreelibrary. org to see how you can become a steward today. Little Libraries can never be too close together and there can never be too many libraries in one community!
