Page 14 March 2014 from kindness of neighbors By Kathleen Shipman The Arcadia News Assisting Neighbors program (ANAN) was created to help bring aid to charities and groups within the neighborhood that need our help. organization Arcadia News was honored to support and with the residents of Arcadia generously donating to the cause, Los Niños has received the items they so desperately needed. “We are truly grateful for the generosity of the readers of Arcadia News and want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all who came by with donations,” said Jennefer Frost, Assistant Director of Nursing at Los Niños. Los Niños Hospital is a small facility near Arcadia that caters to infants, children, and teens. Although they provide excellent care to their patients, due to underfunding, they were lacking the amenities found in other children’s hospitals. By partnering with the children’s boutique Perennials, the ANAN began collecting these items for Los Niños. Between November and February when the program ran, the entire donations. “People have been very receptive,” said Katherine Lowther, owner of Perennials. “Everyone has donated out of the kindness of their hearts.” Baby equipment, furniture, and clothing were just some of the items donated to Los Niños, some of which went home with the families of patients in the hospital. Donations of Christmas gifts were even made during the holiday season, which helped brighten the children’s spirits. Arcadia residents gave to this charitable cause in different ways. Some collected their own gently used baby supplies and brought them down to Los Niños Hospital themselves. Others shopped in Perennials, placing their newly purchased items into the collection box. Customer Svetlana Makitrina even used her own talent for knitting hats and booties and donated bags of the items to the babies of the hospital. “I think it’s important for the residents of Arcadia to give back,” said Svetlana. “It’s another way of being thankful for what you have, to be willing to help the less fortunate ones.” Another participant in the ANAN was resident Anais Sonder. Her personal story relating to an ill child at Los Niños was a reason she too wanted to get involved and donate to the hospital. “I think recognizing the important role that Los Niños plays in this city for chronically ill children and asking the community to help enrich their lives while they are patients is one of the most generous ways a community can care for its newest members,” said Anais. Donations can be made directly to the Los Niños children’s hospital year-round. For more information contact Nayree Ross RN: nross@haciendainc.org. Page 15 March 2014 Salon Sandoval owner Chris Sandoval feels that his staff is an extension of his family. Behind the Business By Amanda Goossen For Chris Sandoval, owner of Salon Sandoval, hair is simply his passion. “I think it’s in my blood,” said Chris. From a very young age, Chris knew he wanted to become a hairdresser. “My aunt owned a salon and was a teacher for Redken,” said Chris. “I’ve always loved the smell of an old salon.” Chris remembers his dad, who he is still very close to, wanting to cut hair as well. He, however, went into the military instead. “He used to practice on my brother and I,” said Chris. “In the 70s when everyone had long hair, he wouldn’t let us. He would cut and cut our hair.” Chris, as if suddenly realizing something, starts to laugh. “That’s probably why I’ve had long hair most of my adult life,” he said. Chris is a family man. Extremely close to his entire family; his parents visit the salon often. He has three daughters, Cayleigh (27), ! ! the salon, you can bet he can be found with one or more of these important people. And his salon staff is an extension of his family. Opening his salon in Arcadia 18 years ago with only $.35 left in his checking account, Chris took quite a gamble to create a business based on his passion. “I never had aspirations to open a salon,” said Chris, “It just seemed like a natural progression even though some told me my business plan would never work.” Statements like that simply motivate Chris’ spirited personality. “It’s like the bumble bee,” said Chris.
