Irizarry was recently presented with the Arcadia News Teachers We Love Award, grade students, Grayson Maxwell, had nominated her for. Both Grayson and his Mother Michele couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the award. “Mrs. Irizarry has a way of making my son and all of her students feel really special,” said Michele. “She’s just a fun, patient teacher…” Irizarry is teaching her students more than just the is also teaching them Spanish. BPA is a Spanish Immersion School, where some of the classes are taught half in Spanish and half in English in order to help the students acquire a second language. Irizarry teaches where she focuses on the subjects of Science and Math. “It’s challenging,” said Irizarry. “But it’s really fun to see how much they’re learning.” Irizarry likes to incorporate her love of competition into her teachings and turn ordinary learning into game-like activities. The students in her class enjoy receiving points for speaking full sentences in rewarding. “I’m kind of a competitive person myself, so it’s really important to me that the students do well.” ! has is bringing hands-on learning to the subjects she teaches. “There are a lot of hands-on activities you can do with Math and Science, so I really enjoy it,” said Irizarry. One of the ways the students are learning about Science in Irizarry’s class is by creating an organic garden. The children have been overjoyed and amazed to see their once tiny plants thrive into actual vegetables. Each week they observe the growth in their garden and journal. “The kids just love it, it’s really exciting,” said Irizarry. “They are all really wonderful students.” The warm demeanor of why Irizarry was nominated for the Arcadia News Teachers We Love Award. When asked why he chose to nominate Mrs. Irizarry for this honor, his beaming smile and child-like words said it all. “She’s really nice and she helps me learn,” Grayson said with joy.
