Page 36 February 2 0 1 4 Local culinary scene given spotlight with Ripe Awards By Danika Worthington Three Arcadia chefs were among the five recipients of the 2014 Ripe Award in recognition of their contribution to the Valley’s culinary scene. The RIPE award, an annual spotlight of local chefs, started last year. Acknowledging five chefs each year who are elevating the Phoenix culinary scene with their diversity and roots within the local culture, the award is bringing attention to some of our city’s most exciting tastemakers. The Phoenix Art Museum’s Men’s Arts Council sponsored the award and hosted a food and wine tasting event at the museum on January 23, said Ty Largo, spokesman with the Ripe Awards. Award recipients were chefs Justin Beckett from Beckett’s table, Danielle Leoni from Breadfruit, Jesse Hansen from Proof, Gio Osso from Virtù and Matt Carter from Zinc Bistro, the Mission, the House Brasserie and Zinc Brasserie. The council partnered with the Arizona Republic’s dining team to choose the chefs, each organization contributing two judges, Largo said. “The art museum is known for celebrating all different mediums of art,” Largo said. Each chef contributed food to the tasting event, Beckett said. His team contributed recipes from his new American South restaurant, Southern Rail, which will be opening near Camelback Road and Third Avenue in 2014. Largo said the award started because the Valley’s culinary scene was starting to gain some national attention. “It’s about claiming all of that buzz and momentum and putting a name to it,” Largo said. Beckett said the award shows the nation that the Valley’s culinary scene is starting to group together. Beckett said that over the past 15 years, the culinary scene has grown and is “poised to explode over the national scene.” One of last year’s winners, Chef Bernie Kantak with Citizen Public House, said the scene is growing but still in its “infancy.” “I think a lot of chefs really have to show a lot of restraint in what we do,” Kantak said. “I don’t think there’s a whole lot of places where a chef is doing what they’re truly passionate about.” But Kantak said the recognition was welcomed, especially when chefs work seven days a week for 365 days a year. “Sometimes it’s almost a little bit of a thankless job,” Kantak said. Beckett said the award not only gave him recognition, but also his hardworking staff. Largo said the recipients represented the future of the culinary scene in the Valley. “(Recipients are) the next generation who are going to build upon that amazing foundation legends have already built for us,” Largo said.
