Page 22 February 2014 Resident connects at TGen By Colton Gavin Erin Massey is a woman on the go. The Arcadia resident serves as vice president of development at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix. TGen’s goal is to research treatments and cures for various diseases ranging from diabetes to cancer. One of the bigger hats Massey wears is cultivating relationships to help TGen reach its fundraising goals. “We try to build connections with donors,” Massey said. “But we are also looking for volunteers.” Massey said she connects with donors and volunteers through their own story of a disease whether it happened to them or a loved one. She recently returned from events in Atlanta to raise funds against pancreatic and adrenal cancers. Hailing from Hillsborough, N.C. and growing up in Portland, Ore., Massey has been living in Arizona throughout her career. She studied communications and Spanish at the University of Arizona. While working as a fundraiser for Phoenix Children’s Hospital, she fell in love with helping patients. After more than three years she went to TGen to continue fundraising to advance research against illnesses. Massey’s work at TGen during the past 11 years has strengthened her Arizona roots. “Our main mission comes from the fact we are a local institute,” Massey said. “We seek to benefit Arizona first and then spread the results to the rest of the nation.” Her work has also attracted the admiration of both the public and her colleagues. The audience at a seminar she was giving for Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold was twice as big as usual. Afterward she received an email from an attendee praising TGen’s “genome mapping” for the life of his wife. Massey’s fundraising also helped establish a new research center in October. The TGen Center for Rare Childhood Disorders is a new research arm that will seek to pinpoint the causes of unusual and previously unidentified illnesses in children. The center will use the latest technology to map a patient’s genome to possibly unlock the secret of an illness. Her colleagues are impressed by her commitment and amiability. “The patient lies at the heart of all we do at TGen. Toward that end, I can think of no better ambassador to our patients, our donors, and our many supporters than Erin,” said Dr. Jeffrey Trent, TGen president and research director. “Her ability to connect with others and engage their support for our mission are hallmarks of her professional success at TGen.” representing students of american and european universities, local and community colleges, high schools and emerging arizona artists. Page 23 February 2014 Arizona’s must-see spots By Michelle Donati-Grayman We live in a magnificently beautiful state with unique landscapes, terrific historical landmarks and a vibrant collection of cultures. On February 14, Arizona will turn 102. To celebrate, AAA’s travel experts put together an Arizona bucket list: Take a tour of Taliesin West Located on the southern slope of the McDowell Mountains, Frank Lloyd Wright began building Taliesin West in 1937. The masterpiece showcases Wright’s ability to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces, and served as his winter home until his death in 1959. Guided tours are available almost every day of the year and range from one to three hours in length. Saddle up at Whiskey Row Named for the bars and saloons that used to line an entire block in downtown Prescott, Whiskey Row is one of most well-known landmarks in the Mile-High city. In 1900, the block was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and remains an integral part of Prescott today. Hike Havasu Falls Located near the isolated village of the Supai at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Havasu Falls plunges nearly 100 feet into beautiful aqua pool surrounded by a sandy beach and cottonwood trees. The journey to the falls starts at the Hualapai Hilltop trailhead, which is a 5- to 6-hour drive from Phoenix, followed by a moderately difficult 10-mile hike. Havasu Falls isn’t easy to get to, but talk to anyone who has been and they’ll tell you it’s worth the trek. Spend the night at a historic hotel There are a number of hotels across the state that offer a fascinating glimpse into Arizona’s colorful past. The Hotel San Carlos started as the first Phoenix schoolhouse in 1874 before being transformed into a hotel in 1928. The Hassayampa Inn has been a Prescott landmark for more than eight decades. Its vintage elevator, which is still functional, is one of its most memorable features. The Hotel Monte Vista opened in downtown Flagstaff in 1927. A few of the hotel’s most famous guests include Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Debbie Reynolds, John Wayne and Clark Gable. Explore Kartchner Cavern Located near Benson, Kartchner Caverns is a live cave that contains stalagmites and stalactites fashioned by mineral deposits left by water that has been dripping underground for millions of years. Now a state park, various tours of the caverns are available. The park also features campgrounds, hiking trails, shaded picnic areas and a hummingbird garden. Uncover the mystique of Mystery Castle In 1930, Boyce Luther Gulley left his family behind in Seattle and moved to the outskirts of Phoenix, where he spent more than a decade building a castle for his beloved daughter, Mary Lou. Located near South Mountain Park, the castle consists of 18 rooms, 13 fireplaces and is furnished with eclectic antiques that range from an old car to recycled bricks. Gulley died before he could send for his family, but Mary Lou moved in to the castle as an adult. She conducted tours of the castle until she died in 2010. Today, friends continue the tradition, offering tours Thursdays through Sundays, October through June. Go big or go home at the Grand Canyon An Arizona bucket list isn’t complete without the Grand Canyon. The Canyon attracts more than 5 million tourists every year from all over the world. Surprisingly, many Arizonans have never been. From its immense size to its inspiring landscapes, the Grand Canyon is something everyone – especially Arizonans – should experience. Be sure to add a stop to take in Sedona’s world-famous red rocks. Whether you’re a native or new to the desert, it’s never too late to start your Arizona bucket list and explore everything that has made Arizona what it is over the last century. Happy birthday, Arizona – 102 never looked better! Michelle Donati-Grayman is an Arcadia resident who works for AAA Arizona.
