Karly McCauley, an Arcadia High School senior, was recognized for her extensive contributions to the community she’s called home since she was born. Karly gave her acceptance speech at The Spirit of Community Leadership Awards Luncheon on December 13. Throughout her four years of high school, she has consistently been active both on and off the campus. She currently holds the title of Student Body President, as well as plays for the Varsity Soccer team. Karly is not only one of the founding members of the Student Advisory Board, but serves on the District-level as well. However, her presence extends past the Arcadia community. She has volunteered over 200 hours of her time to the National Charity League. In addition, she is a dedicated volunteer in the Phoenix Sister Cities Youth Ambassador exchange program. The nonprofit organization selects students to send around the world for three weeks, to enhance their understanding of various cultures and customs. Her educational trip to France through the program is documented in her blog, www.karlydaisy.com. Motivating Karly to remain active in the community is the positive impact she believes she helps create. “The smiles, thank yous and gratefulness of those who are helped are more than enough to inspire me to return again and again,” Karly said. After she graduates from Arcadia High, an immediate goal is to enroll in college with a major in Mechanical Engineering, minor in Entrepreneurship and earn a certificate in International Relations. She also plans to continue her passion to serve in extracurricular activities such as student government. A larger scale dream for Karly is to launch her own business. Her idea, Teen Scene, is a way to connect teens with their community to prevent them from engaging in negative behavior. Teen Scene’s mission is to synchronize safe and age- appropriate events in collaboration with local businesses. The Youth Entrepreneur Academy, an organization in affiliation with the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), is aiding in its creation by providing resources, training and learning opportunities. “Last but certainly not least, I hold a large goal near and dear to my heart: I want to journey to third world countries to promote gender equality and provide educational opportunities to women,” Karly said. Arcadia High School senior Karly McCauley was awarded the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Youth Leadership award on December 13, 2013. Page 15 February 2 0 14 Frances Cohen and Susie Silverman Behind the Business By Amanda Goossen Dance Theatre West (DTW) is an Arcadia staple. Frances Cohen and Susie Silverman are the exuberant force behind it all. Little girls grow to become young women while in the care of these two exceptional women. They learn to pirouette across the dance room, to point their toes and stand up straight. But more than that, girls grow up in the hands of these caring and incredibly talented women who have nothing but their best interest in mind. “We learn just as much from them as they learn from us,” said Fran. “I love each and every one of these beautiful girls.” The sincerity in Fran’s voice, the love in her eyes, shines as she talks of her life in dance. “When I was a girl, I danced. I always danced,” said Fran. Receiving a scholarship to the renowned Bennington College in Vermont, Francis Cohen would receive a top-notch dance education from a school known for being the first to include visual and performing arts in a liberal arts education. Its progressive attitude toward the arts was unique for its time. One of the first institutions to foster modern dance in its infancy, Bennington College would give Fran an education in things few in the world were experiencing. After receiving her degree, Fran would get married and move to Germany. After two years, she and her husband would settle in Tucson. “It was 1955, I was eight months pregnant and telling my husband I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life,” said Fran. “He looked at me and said ‘start your own studio,’” said Fran. The rest is history. Fran’s studio, Kadimah Dancers would become the first touring dance studio in Arizona. Susie Silverman was 15 years old when her family moved from New York to Tucson. With her family’s economical status changing, Susie wasn’t sure her dance education would continue. Fran, however, would offer her a scholarship. What neither of these women knew, however, is that this scholarship would become the catalyst for an eventual business, in an entirely new city. Twenty-seven years ago, after spending decades apart, Susie and Fran would run into each other in Phoenix. A discussion, followed by some plans and an eventual handshake agreement, would put the plans for Dance Theatre West into motion. “Our husbands, who are both lawyers were horrified,” said Susie. “They couldn’t believe we would build a company on a handshake.” That handshake however would prove to be all they needed. “We just work well together,” said Susie. “I like to do what she doesn’t like to do, if we disagree we talk about it. It just works.” “Every year when we sign the lease for NOW OPEN: Giant Rustic Pizza Phoenix 3945 E Camelback Road www.giantrusticpizza.com Spectrum Dermatology Camelback and 44th Street www.spectrumdermatology.com MorningStar at Arcadia 3200 E Glenrosa Ave www.morningstarseniorliving.com Rhinestone Rodeo 7051 E 5th Ave www.rhinestonerodeo.com OPENING SOON: Steak 44 5101 N 44th Street www.steak44.com TIDBITS: Mike Macchiaroli Tree Company earns 2013 Angie’s List Super Service Award. And neither has any plans of doing that anytime soon. Fran, other than teaching at DTW, is the Artistic Director for the Center Dance Ensemble, the resident dance company for the Herberger Theatre. She began Wolf Trap in Arizona, the placing of performing artists in Head Start classrooms in our state and has been the regional director for this program since 1986. Susie, is director of the Dance Theatre West Classical Ballet Program and is the artistic director of Story Book Ballet Theater which collaborates in performance with Free Arts of AZ, Detour Company and Scottsdale Center for the Arts. She is the Dance Chair for the Greater Arizona Chapter of National Society of Arts and Letters and is a board member of Center Dance Ensemble. Together these two collaborate to change the lives of young girls, or to at least to teach them to move their feet and d the Scottsdale Active 20-30 Youth find the rhythm. “We want to encourage kids to dance,” said Fran. With all their effort, they most definitely will. Dance Theater West is located at 3925 E. Idian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85018.
