Time for studying, homework and tests. However it’s easy to be overwhelmed by it all, so perhaps a two-hour break would do some good. Last September’s review was a list of DVDs to mark the return of school, so here is another. These two DVDs are coming out soon, both sequels to a bigger franchise. Star Trek Into Darkness (on DVD Sept. 10) The second installment of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot series, Star Trek Into Darkness follows the crew of the Enterprise as they go up against a seemingly unbeatable threat. Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) leads an impossible mission that may cause him to question his confidence in the words he spoke back at Star Fleet Academy: “I don’t believe in no-win scenarios.” Just as f a s t - p a c e d and exciting as the one before it, this sequel manages to exceed expectations. The writing is just as clever and entertaining, and it shows off some of the best filming recently seen on the big screen. Much of the series’ success is due to its excellent cast. From Pine in the captain’s chair to Simon Pegg in engineering, these actors aren’t only known for their good looks. Benedict Cumberbatch joins the talented cast as the opposition, hitting the intimidating notes without hesitation. Joining its predecessor as one to watch over and over again, Star Trek Into Darkness gets 4 stars. Iron Man 3 (on DVD Sept. 24) A new enemy, a terrorist called the Mandarin, threatens to destroy Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) world, and the pressure’s on for Iron Man to come to the rescue. Tony will have to go to desperate measures to face this new c h a l l e n g e , and even those might not be enough to save everything Tony has fought to protect. The Iron Man movies reflect Tony Stark’s personality well. They’re flashy and dramatic, with plenty of humor and sarcasm, but they also can be serious and show some thrilling heroics. Speaking of Tony, Downey Jr. was instantly accepted as the billionaire after the first movie and has not disappointed since. He manages to portray each part of Tony’s personality, capturing the best and worst of the character without making him unlikeable or unbelievable. The actual plot may not be quite as thrilling as the previous two films, but it’s still entertaining and the scenes themselves keep the audience’s interest. Overall, though, the writing is witty and Downey Jr. definitely is Iron Man. Iron Man 3 earns 3 ½ stars from me.
