Page 54 September 2013 Sportsman’s Continued from page 47 we think that Sportsman’s is one of those, that it’s worth keeping,” Basha said. When Sportsman’s first opened in 1957, it only sold alcohol and cigarettes, Fuchs said. After several owners came and went, Michael and Elliott Fine bought Sportsman’s in 1987. The father and son duo turned Sportsman’s into a wine store with a “cozy” wine bar that sat eight to 10 people, Fuchs said. In 2007, Bashas’ acquired Sportsman’s and the neighboring flower shop. The company remodeled the wine shop for $1.3 million, Fuchs said. The wine bar section was moved to what used to be the flower shop. Bashas’ thought the wine bar would be a good opportunity for expansion, Basha said. But after the recession and filing Chapter 11, Bashas’ decided to refocus on the grocery aspect of the company with Bashas’, Food City and AJ’s Fine Food. The 15 Sportsman’s employees were relocated to AJ’s because of their knowledge of wine, Basha said. Sportsman’s has been in the shopping center since the center opened. Fuchs, president and CEO of Camelback East Shops Property, said the center was unique because it was one of a few centers still around since the ‘50s without a stucco look, grocery store or pharmacy anchor.

It’s understood not all the music presented will stir your drink, but maybe there will be a track that strokes your tastes and motivates your interest to sink your teeth further into a band or artist. Investigating and enjoying music is simple, easily explored from the comfort of your computer or your local record shop, but the heart of the art form is best experienced in the great venues we’re lucky to have all around us. Don’t be fearful, be proud, indulge in our city scene and get out to a show.
