Somewhere along the way, however, people who make these sorts of decisions decided early-to-mid August was a better time to buy new clothes and a backpack full of crayons, pencils and glue. I don’t handle change well, so I’m slow to warm up to the idea and still believe our children need as much down time as possible in this chaotic, fast-paced life. To me, back to school will always mean September, fall and a beautiful bowl of shiny red apples (yes, I’m a tad bit sentimental). It also means new books. Growing up I was the girl who loved going back to school. I loved buying a slew of new loot as well as the anticipation of learning new things. More than anything, though, I couldn’t wait to find out what I’d be reading in the coming year. I hope your summer reading was successful. I didn’t quite make it through my list, but I discovered some amazing books. So much so, for the first time the Arcadia News Book Club will read two books. Join us 7 p.m. September 26 at the Saguaro Library, 2808 N. 46th St. I’ve chosen two books by the same author, because I just couldn’t choose between them. In her novels, Randy Susan Meyers provides strong, well-developed characters simply finding their way through the maze of life. Each character and story line is captivating and feels far too real. Our monthly Skype session with the author promises to be informative and terrific. BOOK CLUB SELECTION The Murderer’s Daughters By Randy Susan Meyers Four years ago, Meyers’ debut novel The Murderer’s Daughters became a smashing success almost overnight. The first chapter of the novel, based on an instance from Meyers’ own childhood, takes a look at domestic abuse and those so tragically a f f e c t e d . Stemming from a moment in her own life when at 4 years old her father stormed in to their apartment and tried to kill her mother, Meyers uses her novel to explore “what if.” What if he’d been successful? What happens to a family when the ultimate catastrophe occurs? Gorgeously written with deep emotion and tremendous prose, Meyers takes readers on a powerful journey through the lives of two sisters, thrown from a life of near-abandonment with a careless, self- centered mother to a life of devastation in an orphanage after watching their father murder their mother. The Murderer’s Daughters is a novel of fear, growth and self-discovery. It’s a story of sisters fighting to move forward in spite of all they’ve seen, and how two very different people handle the same circumstances in different ways. The Comfort of Lies By Randy Susan Meyers In Meyers’ second novel, The Comfort of Lies, readers meet three women with one thing in common, a sweet 5-year-old girl. Tia has chosen to believe her b o y f r i e n d Nathan will someday leave his wife. When she tells him she’s pregnant, however, her world begins to collapse. He wants nothing to do with the child and walks away from her, returning to his wife and two sons, Continued on page 53
