Page 24 September 2013 First cruise takes local couple on a tour of Alaska By Kaley Kalil Kathleen and Ted Crowley have lived in the Arcadia area since 1986. Kathleen, a native, actually grew up here and watched Arcadia High School being built. “Probably the best thing about living in Arcadia is the sense of community,” Kathleen said. “Despite the fact that Phoenix is the nation’s sixth largest city, there is a small town feel about living in Arcadia.” The Crowleys recently took an 18-day summer vacation with their friends, Rose and Greg Riney. In early June, the four longtime friends found themselves on a Princess cruise ship to Alaska. “None of us had ever been on a cruise, and we all wanted to experience the magnificence of the Alaskan glaciers from both land and sea,” Kathleen said. “The ship was beautiful, efficient and elegant, and we especially loved our balcony. We had great views of the glaciers without fighting the crowds on deck, and saw literally dozens of whales swimming alongside the ship,” Ted said. They jumped at the opportunity to extend the cruise to a land tour that included a stopover at Denali Wildlife Park. Page 25 September 2013 ka Homestead, Anchorage and Alaska’s landlocked capital, Juneau. There was no shortage of intriguing, local fare for the Crowleys to try. They quickly discovered reindeer or caribou was on the menu most everywhere in Alaska. “We ate it in sausages that were like bratwurst, and in stews,” Kathleen said. “Unfortunately, we arrived shortly before salmon season, so we missed out on the freshest salmon.” “On the plus side, we also missed out on the worst of the mosquitoes,” Ted added. One local specialty the Crowleys regret having missed were Japadogs – Japanese- style hot dogs served from street carts. “Apparently, they were the most popular food during the Winter Olympics, and people would wait in long lines that wound around the block just to get one,” Kathleen said. “We did have the feeling that we had to eat our way to obesity in order to get a full return on the price of a cruise ticket,” Ted said. The Crowleys disembarked in Vancouver early one morning and hit the ground running. They rented a car and drove to Whistler, B.C., Canada – site of the 2010 Winter Olympics skiing events. The next time the Crowleys visit Alaska, they plan on renting a car and perusing the land at their own pace. They’d like to travel to Fairbanks and see more of the wildlife in their natural habitat. “Seeing glaciers calving (when large chunks fall off) in person is a breathtaking experience, as well as a painfully dismal reminder that global warming is having widespread consequences. We all shared the attitude that we should see them while they were still there to be seen,” Kathleen said.
