Page 22 September 2013 By Stephanie Jarnagan In light of the Yarnell Hill fire and tragedy, Dino Paul, an Arcadia resident of 16 years, put his artistic talent to good use. Trees are a favorite subject in his paintings, and he had been working on a piece, titled Out of the Ashes, prior to hearing about the destructive wildfire that took the lives of 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots. “Hearing that news inspired me to finish the piece,” Paul said. “I always like to have an underlying message to my work whenever possible and this one is about resiliency in a way and it also offers a message of hope.” He added, “I never intended for it to be a tribute piece, but it is certainly poignant given the timing.” The artwork will be part of a silent auction at the 7th annual Jason Schechterle Scholarship Ball September 28 at the Arizona Grand Resort. This black-tie optional event, which is open to the public, represents the 100 Club of Arizona’s largest fundraiser of the year. Paul’s technique, which he calls “controlled chaos,” combines drawing, melting ink, digitally layering files, making a print and embellishing it with pastels and acrylics. “I accidentally discovered the technique I use now while working on a graphic design project for a client,” said Paul, who owns the Arcadia-based graphic design firm Dino Design. “I spilled a rubber cement remover on a bunch of my laser prints and ruined them. But when I took a closer look, I thought they were interesting so I held on to them. Eventually, I began exploring how various chemicals have an effect on different substrates.” Out of the Ashes, which Paul values at $1,500, took him about 30 hours to perfect, beginning with sketches. He then transferred his sketches into digital drawings and made numerous prints. It took about 20 attempts using paint thinner and acetone to get the effect he was looking for, which can be seen in the burned trees. He then used charcoal pencils to embellish the final piece. Paul connected with the 100 Club of Arizona and offered to donate the piece to help the nonprofit raise funds for its cause. Dan Henry, owner of Dan’s Custom Framing and Art in Old Town Scottsdale, donated a frame for the piece valued at $475. “The 100 Club is beyond grateful for the community support that the Granite Mountain Hotshot survivors, Prescott Fire Department and the 100 Club has received,” said Sharon Knutson-Felix, executive director of the 100 Club of Arizona. “Dino’s artwork is a great way to pay tribute to our fallen by supporting their families in a unique and meaningful way.” For more information on the 100 Club of Arizona or the event, visit www.100club.org.
